Burning DVD's onto my comuters hard disk

Hi all

I am going travelling for a while and taking my laptop with me. I want to put some movies / DVD's etc onto the hard disk so I can watch them while away.
Can anyone recommend any good software (free preferably) or ways of doing this.

Windows Media player will do it fine...it comes with windows free anyway.
