Managed to break the pair of plastic hinges on one of my 1150GSA alloy panniers (long story!). Rang the nice man at SPC to get a pair of replacements, only to find they are £20 each (ie £40 per box)

Can anyone suggest alternative hinges - preferably not the ones off my front door!

Thanks

Have you got the stainless steel cable wire fitted to the lid/pannier to stop the lid going over centre?

If not then this will stop the problem, however, if you have already got them fitted then sorry no idea!

Thanks for the advice - told you it was a long story, and I will fit the wire stays, but I still need to replace the broken ones for less than 40 quid.

Any ideas?

Pay the money and chalk it down to experience. Although my hinges were replaced under warranty when they broke because bmw had not offered me the wire straps at the time.

Replacement hinge

I too broke the hinge on my GSA pannier, BMW wanted $95 Aueach,
Here is a clue,
The hinge is mage by a company called Southco,
The name of the company is stamped on the inside of the hinge,
The hinge type you are after is: C6-3 type,
http://www.southco.com/product/part.aspx?pid=12955
Check the web site too see if there is a distributor in the UK,
The hinge was $21Au, so I bought 4 for the price of one from BMW.
No issues in finding a aftermarket hinge, :D
Hope this helps,

Now this is a result ! It should be made a sticky for all adv owners.

If you're going to contact them Mr French adv, maybe you could ask them if they do an equivalent replacement that is metal not plastic, then when we over centre them it will rip/bend the ally box instead of breaking the hinge :D

just thought I'd bump this thread, as it's just saved me some money:thumb2.

whilst on the outward journey to tuscany, my pannier hinges self destructed, and the lid went flying across the car park - much to the amusement of the others in the group(and there was a retaining strap fitted which also broke). All I can say is thank goodness I had some bungies with me :)

I've just ordered the hinges and they'll hopefully sort out the pannier.

Although I must admit I'm considering using rok straps (or whatever they're called) to hold the lids in place, rather than plastic hinges and locks.

Cheers

just ordered a pair of these from Zygology, £28 inc vat+p&P

they are £7.20 each and Postage was just under £9  Will undate with exact prices wehn the invoice arrives.

I managed to break mine when the ring for the shoulder strap on My Cee baileys top box bag sliped between the hinges and when I closed the and locked it poped one hinge and half did for the other !

they arrived this morning. Certainly look the same. 2 hinges and the plastic covers that cover the bold heads.
£27.03 all in. Sadly the invocie doesnt break the prices down.

So I know what I am doing Saturday then :)

the hinges are for the top box and I get to ride the bike everyday to work and back oh and its curenly raing here so I dont see the point of going out and getting wet again having just got in and cracked open a  :) Saturday will do :)

well seperate invoice arrived this morning.
the hinges are £7.25 each pluss VAt
P&P is £8.50 1st Class Post.

Bit miffed at postage. I had a army surplus artic spec sleeping bag delivered for £7.50 came in a (huge cardbord box) by courier and one of those new Oxford Maximisers 360T on 48Hour parcel Farce from Erie at a cost of £4.99 again packed in a cardboard box and these people charge £8.50 too send 2 hinges in a jiffy bag by post.

Southco in Aus have a minimum $2000 order - try RGA Fastners 02 95607266 or UES 02 87459000 both in Sydney if you only want a couple.
