Busted Today In Pont-y-Bodkin

Where is Pont-y-bodkin and exactly what were you doing to incur such wrath.

Up near Mold, wrexham road A5104 has a fixed camara in the village
twisties @ 30mph before it and after it, the plod hide in the trees.
but then you would expect that sort of thing here in North Wales.
They also deploy unmanned camaras in the twisties with a link to the plod in the village so you don't no you have been got till you enter the village at 30mph after your little blast through the trees..:mcgun

Surely they've got to deploy speed camera warning signs for it tobe a legal bust.

The signs are in place and have been fer years. Spotted today in Flint a new camara van, white no signs on it at all, the whole of the rear was covered in those dayglo orange and red (council truck) chevrons just had a little trapdoor in the left rear door for the camara to point out.:spitfire

I will carry my camara around in future...

Warnings

Dont see why, I think this is an urban myth, the speed sign tells you what the speed of the road is, they dont have to give you an extra warning that they may be around to catch you breaking the law even though it would be good manners to i agree. You pays your money and take your chances as far as i'm concerned.

Nope - he's right. The Camera Guidelines used clearly to state that signs must be visible up to 100m away - even with the new Guidelines it's still the case (quotes below). Problem was, the guidelines are simply that - guidelines.

Signing

40. A speed limit is made lawful by the presence of street lights and/or a Traffic Regulation Order and the provision of prescribed speed limit signs appropriately located that comply with the TSRGD.
41. The Department has published an aide-memoire (DfT, 2006a) that provides guidance on speed limit and safety camera signing and is designed to ensure correct and consistent signing across the country. It does not replace or update the legal requirements of TSRGD but should be considered as best practice.

In summary:
• Camera signs should continue to be co-located with speed limit signs where permitted and practicable.

• For fixed speed enforcement, co-located camera and speed limit reminder signs should continue to be placed to allow the signs and speed camera to be visible to the driver in the same view. A camera sign may also be placed not more than 1km from the first camera housing in the direction being enforced (including or excluding side roads at the discretion of the road safety partnership).

• For mobile enforcement, co-located camera and speed limit reminder signs should continue to be placed in advance of the point of entry to the site or route (including or excluding side roads at the discretion of the road safety partnership) in the direction being enforced. Camera signs should also continue to be placed thereafter at intervals of around 1 km throughout the length being enforced.

And they clearly state, on visibility:

Visibility
45. Depending upon the enforcement method used, speed camera housings (including tripod-mounted cameras) or the camera operator or the mobile enforcement vehicle should be clearly visible from the driver’s viewpoint at the following minimum visibility
distances:

• 60 metres where the speed limit is 40 mph or less;
• 100 metres at all other speed limits.

But at the end of Sec. 49, it says VERY clearly:

This camera signing, visibility and conspicuity guidance has no bearing on the enforcement of offences. Non-compliance with this guidance does not provide any mitigation of, or defence for, an alleged offence committed under current UK law.

So there's a guideline saying cameras should be signposted and warning given, but that failing to do so doesn't mitigate the offence.

The road through Pont Y Bodkin has several speed camera warning signs.
This is one of the main routes up to the Horseshoe pass and the Ponderosa and I had always considered the area through the trees to be safe from cameras. So a big thanks for the warning:thumb2

Hi Hew, my mate lives in Hope!
We both work in Broughton at Airbus.

I am the guy who started this thread (& was caught) & I can tell you I WASN'T caught by a camera through those trees.

One thing I will take away from this experience is ALWAYS LOOK IN MY MIRRORS!

That is 1 of the factors that got me my section 59 warning, (the other being my excess of speed of course)

There is only 1 (fixed) camera to my knowledge in Pont-y-Bodkin.
Just before the Railway pub (heading to Horseshoe Pass) but anyone speeding in this area deserves all they get. (kiddies play area + residential)

Panzer, lucky as fook not to get a fine or points!

I know it..

Sounds like a lucky escape for you.. as a local, they arent usually that forgiving..

I dont know about static cameras in the trees, never seen any there, but the helicopter does occasionally hover over the valley top, and can time you from the junction with the wrexham road, then wait for you to appear in the village befor the camera (note the timing marks at side of road next time ;) ) and as its on time stamped recording they can do you, as they know the distances.. so can calculate your average speed.

Its a technique they use in other areas of north wales too...

In the location as described & touching 45mph for a safe overtake then returning to the legal speed ? Would have considered this pretty much common practise. In this sort of a situation I would have thought the officer concerned may have carried out exactley the same manouvre to make reasonable progress on his journey, in fact unless I am very wrong this is what's he will have been taught to do(I'm sure I will be informed very quickly if I'm mis informed). Very pedantic IMO.

I got busted on the A499 around pontlyfini yesterday.

Nice wide straight road, sea on left open fields on right.

limit changed from 60 to 40 so I shut the throttle and let then engine slow me down.

Next thing, a guy in Black climbs out of a hedge and stops me for 6 mph over the limit.

He must have walked there or been dropped off because there was no car/van for a 1/4 mile either way.

£60 fine 3 points - first in 25 years/300,000 miles.

thanks to the sport bike lemmings for stirring up the hornets nest !

Blimey!

Makes my 50% over the limit 'let off' look like a p155 take!

I'm sorry for you turnip.

(my last pull was 1990 btw)

Did he ask you if you had your documents with you?
The PC who pulled me asked me TWICE, each time I said no. I had the feeling if I had my docs on me I would have got a fine & points. (as I did in 1990)

its funny but he has given me a 7 day producer - why do we have these ?
DVLA know that I have tax, insurance, MOT and license.

And to be given a duplicate in Welsh !!

Speed cameras

It's not that many years ago that there WAS a fixed camera on the twisties between the trees. I'm always a little restrained through there in case it has returned! I was going to post a link here to the "Arrive Alive" website where the Police kindly post the mobile camera schedule for the next week, but having just checked it appears not to have been updated since April. The local officer for the Deeside Industrial Park used to send out the schedules by email every week and I haven't seen one of those for a while either. Maybe they have stopped giving out advance warning?

I pass Deeside Ind Park every working day & I must admit I 'aint seen any police since they've put the cones out for the road works. They used to wait on the flyover & catch speeders coming through the lights on that blind bend. It's a 40 limit through the lights now & there are temp. camera warning signs & it's reduced to 2 lanes (although I turn off towards Two Mills & I have never seen any cameras)
As this is my route to work I never speed for the full 30 mile journey, I keep saying to myself 'I go to work to make money NOT to collect speding fines'

Time's flying by now - My Section 59 will soon be void. :clap
