Buttertubs Pass - what's that all about?

Been over loads of times and while it's set in spectular scenery I've never thought the route deserves its reputation as one of England's "must drive" roads

Am I missing something? [it wouldn't be the first time...]:blast

Dunno 'bout buttertubs pass but I came down "the Struggle" from Kirkstone pass to Ambleside and it had been re-surfaced with lots if loose, fresh gravel

The Harley riders coming up towards me were definately bricking it :D

Sorry, I digress :blast

The Buttertubs Pass has never gotten my adrenaline going either, IMHO, there are several much more enjoyable stretches of road in the north than that one.

For instance, Kirkstone Pass :D

I love that bit of road particularly travelling towards Hawes. Six (ish) miles of well surfaced sweeping bends, with utterly spectacular scenery.

The Dales has got to be a ‘must do’ for any biker, and to leave out the Buttertubs would be unforgivable......:rob

The Buttertubs is a very good road indeed, but not (IMHO) a great road.

Aysgarth to Kettlewell is better (again, IMHO)

Done this route last week, West Witton - Melmerby - Kettlewell - Oughtershaw up to Hawes, cracking route with great views which is Buttertub's main attraction too IMO.

Was through Buttertubs yesterday for the first time...sadly in the car. Very impressed in the whole area because it was so very quiet as well as a good road. I was pretty impressed with scenery but for a fun ride I thought the road from Nateby to Birkdale was more fun for a bike. So agree, Buttertubs good but not great for a bike.

Buttertubs Pass - what's that all about?
Odd isn't it? A few of my friends rave on about it & I think it's because it has a hairpin. It's a nice road, but I've ridden better. Perhaps that's the key :augie

Rode over Hardknott & later the Struggle a couple of Sunday's ago. This new surface gravel takes away the pleasure of riding such a road. However I was going up & riding a Serow so it wasn't an issue :thumb

Further to this
I guess it's down to what sort of road you prefer !
Personally for the most part I like small single carriageway roads, the twistier the better but a good swooping type A road has its good points.
There are some great roads in Lincolnshire but the memsahib hates them as there is duck all to see !
Hence the butter tub pass is recommended from a pillion view point and its not bad to blast over !!

I've never understood why anyone raves about the Cat & Fiddle pass. okay it was a canny road, but there are hundreds if not thousands like it?

Buttertubs Pass is a canny road too. There are lots of canny roads thankfully.

:rob

As Mr K states, there are many good roads in this country and being from the north east we have easy access to most. Whether its a fish and chip run to Whitby, a run around the many dales, over to the Lake District or up to Northumberland and beyond to Scotland there are roads to suit everyone within an hour or two . Speaking of which, where shall I go tomorrow :D
