Buying parts in the States

I'm off to the US in a couple of months time and will probably end up buying some trinkets for my new toy (Heritage).

What, if any, are the pitfalls of getting the parts back into the UK?.

I nearly had a pitfall in Indianapolis in 2011. My checked in luggage was at risk of being way overweight and without thinking about it too much, I stuffed quite a lot of things into my carry on bag, including a lot of GPS kit and a radar/laser detector which I'd brought from home......and a set of self-centering drill extractors which my host in Indianapolis, Earache had obtained from a hippy in the Arizona desert and which were destined for a late, great friend in Perth. Security got a bit twitchy about the amount of electronic kit in my bag and were less than happy about the drills. It was the weekend of 9/11 as well but in the end due to my excessively charming personaility and first class negotiating skills, they let me on board with everything in my bag.

Buy them, parcel them and send them to yourself... De packed and marked as second hand parts at a nominal value... Arrive home and pay duty on declared value....

Getting stopped and being required to pay duty at UK perceived values of your goods.

Buy them, parcel them and send them to yourself... De packed and marked as second hand parts at a nominal value... Arrive home and pay duty on declared value....

....and declare the value as less than £130 ( it's something like that)......no duty...just vat......or was that only on new parts.......

There are a few dealers that sell on line at a discount, typically 20% off and no state sales tax it they ship to a different state. That savings could help offset your vat.

Once I had come back from the US with an expensive Samsonite suitcase full of bits'n'pieces which I had locked due to a lot of thieving going on well, arrived at Manchester airport only to see it on the carousel totally wrapped in white tape with 'Home Borderland Security'. The fuckers had jemmied it open; ruining the locking system. Left a nice polite note inside though.

Last March came back from Orlando with another suitcase of bits through Manchester without problems. Try not to look too suspicious.
