Bypassing Imac Admin password

I've just bought an old Imac as an introduction to Macs. I've just tried to update the software and it's asking for a password before allowing me to do this, unfortunatly, the guy I got it froms son put the original in and cannot remember what he put in.

Any ideas?

If it's running OSX then Boot from your install disk (hold down the "C" key at startup with the disk inserted). When the installer has loaded, open the "Reset Password" utility from the "Utility" menu, and reset the "System Administrator" password.

Thanks Emjay, I haven't got the original disks. Guess I'll have to get on Ebay. Unless somebody has a copy of OS X 10

Which version of OSX have you got? Click the Apple in the menu bar at the top left of the screen then select > About this Mac it will tell you the version number, currently at 10.4.4

Then PM me, I have been running OSX from day one almost 5 years ago now, so probably have a version to suit.

Last Mac OS before OSX was 9.2.1 or was it 9.2.2. but I ran an old beige G3 on the original 10.0, it ran slowly but it did work. Later upgrade, can't remember which one, wouldn't install though. I'm not sure about the iMac but Rob said his was running Panther 10.3.6

definatley OSX on it. Not a bad little machine for £50. The 15inch screens a bit small but apart from that it seems to be quite zippy. I's got 300+mb of ram and a GS 400MHz processor. The back up battery is Toast but it updates from my Broadband router as soon as it starts.

Mmmmm so do I - especially as it turned out to be a dual processor system (mistakenly spec'd by John Lewis and priced accordingly) .

So I have rather a lot of a G5 powermac for less than the price of a mac mini with a full 2 year warranty - today I whacked 2Gb of RAM in it and this thing is ready to launch rockets into Orbit

I'm keeping it firmly in it's place by attaching it to an old 17" CRT display but I am itching to hook it up to something more worthy and get my creative juices flowing
