Cam chain tensioner s

Why didn't Harley just use gears on the TC ? Been watching videos and the cam sprockets are so close together its hardly worth linking them by a chain and cam tensioner.
I've watched some gear conversions on you tube and they make far more sense, although wont the new cam gears put a strain on the crank because of the lack of any free play between the cam gear wheels ?
I don't know, but I think the hydraulic tensioner's will have a longer life than the spring one because I guess the pressure changes as required with give and take up ? Or is that bollocks ?
Not sure what cams my 110 TC runs but if in time I did the gear mod would an upgrade cam change be worth it ? Don't think I'd trust the local Harley shop, but who else does them.

If you really want some engine work done, then come down here (Worcs.) . In fact come along on the 12th April, and we can run through all sorts of bullshit...and just to muddy the waters...and give you something to really think about...google Knight Prowler Belt Drive.......
The reason they went with chains was cost and noise. Along with improved shoes the hydraulic tensioners apply a lot less pressure and tensioner wear hasn't been an issue (that I'm aware of) since they went with them on the 96" and on. Some of the 96's now have 100,000+ miles on them. Thankfully Harley made the hydraulic tensioner system retrofittable as a kit for the 88" motors.

A word of warning for anyone going down this route. Don't buy the 96" cam plate off e-bay or wherever and think you can retro-fit to your 88"...you can't ...unless you buy special cams. The inner journals are a different size........ Guess how I know.....
