Cam chain tensioner

Removed the camchain tensioner on a 1994 Funduro. 19000 miles. According to the manual you should be able to compress it. This one doesn't. Can can turn the one part. How much should it be able to compress. The whole length of the piston? According to motorworks this isn't something that gives problems so thye will have to order one in. If it is "broken" is there any damage I should look for except a ratly cam chain?
 
It's a hydraulic tensioner operated by engine oil pressure.There is a small hole through which you can poke a pin to depress the non return valve,a small ball bearing,to release the pressure.
If that doesn't do it,I guess it's seized and you'll need a new one.

Thanks Tony I've been taking another look at the tensioner and saw the small ballbearing in the part that push down. I pressed against it with a piece of wire and was able to compress the tensioner. Now I know how that also works. Every day in the garage is a experience...
