When I decided to buy a new-ish RT, I went for the cam head on the grounds that most of the issues which dogged previous hexheads would have been sorted. (Final drive especially.)

I've now done 9k miles (10.7 k miles in total) since last October on my 13 reg, and other than one fuel pump controller failure, no problems. I now have to decide whether to go for the extended warranty. Before I make my mind up, I thought I would see what problems have cropped up for other owners.

So fire away ...

(Thread replicated in the RT section.)

The FD/wheel bearing can still be an issue. All they did to the TC was put a breather on it so at least the seals should last longer.

I get criticised for saying this but my 08 has run with 220ml of oil in the FD with zero problems from 33K until the wheel bearing failed at 50K. I then had the whole thing rebuilt by MikeyBoy who found all bearings were at end of life. Its continuing with 220ml of oil.

IME 220ml has no increased risk of oil seals blowing out (mine has no breather) but the additional oil will give the internal pinion bearing more chance of getting enough oil as most of the volume will get centrifuged to the outer edges of the case. BMW only reduced the oil level (from 220 to 180) to avoid breather blow-by. If that happens with "over filling", it's simply some mess to clean up and drop the oil level a little.

I'll be facing the same dilemma in December.
I bought a 4k mile 2012 TC from a dealer last year, so came with the AUB warranty. It'll be my bikes anniversary the week before Christmas so I'll be landed with a fairly eye watering bill - service, MOT, tax and warranty renewal (if I choose to take it up).

Although I'll probably be called all sorts of idiot, my current thinking is that I'll probably do the warranty. While the TC bikes are widely held to be the best sorted and most reliable, they're still machines that can go wrong and they have some expensive components (ESA suspension, FD etc) that would easily swallow the cost of the warranty. Also given that I do a fair bit of European travel, the included breakdown cover is handy.

You don't get European breakdown cover on extended warranty

My extended warranty quote arrived today £330 with £100 excess or £387 with no excess. This includes BMW Emergency Service in the EU. 2013 GSA TB
Now to decide whether to stump up nigh on £400 or not, I already have full euro cover elsewhere but knocking that off only drops it to £360.

I renewed yesterday.

Bought my bike S/H last year. Warranty was transferred to me but I didn't get a reminder in May when it expired. Rang them to check when it was due.

Because of break in continuity there woukd have been a month delay in cover. I'm travelling in 3 weeks so said I'd renew if they approach underwriters and confirm immediate cover. They called back and agreed. Same prices you were quoted.

If you don't mind doing a bit of work yourself you wont need the extended warranty. For example, a rebuilt final drive will cost the same as 12 month's insurance so save up the premiums to use when you need it.

If you are not wired for doing such things and/or you like the security of the insurance then go for it. The costs are similar to most car warranty plans.

On a trip 8 weeks again my mates RT failed. Oil out if the FD and to cut a long story short. It was shipped to UK dealer of his choice, they paid his hotel, gave him a hire car which they arranged for him to take through tunnel, a 5 series for 14 days whilst his was rebuilt, etc. I quite like that cover. Don't think i will keep it always by for now it's reasonable
