Currently in the market for a Transporter type campervan. New to this lifestyle but getting some tips etc. form a thread I started in the campervan section.
Mainly to be used as a day van and sometimes for one or 2 overnights

What I would be ideal (but not all strictly necessary):

- MWB / LWB T5 or T6, manual.
- Highline or similar spec preferred
- < 100k miles or thereabouts
- pop top
- custom conversion (but may consider a DIY one)
- usual internal stuff - sink, fridge cooker, night heater etc.
- good service history with paperwork & serviced up to date
- budget up £25k

I know that I will have to travel to get what I am after.

So what ya got ??

TIA

Paul

Rent one. Seriously, rent one first.
Very few stick with them as the T5 platform is a dog unless you get one of the rare reliable ones.
They’re also terrible internally for actual useable space.
There are always compromises to be made to a point.

I agree with Pita. We got all starry eyed and nearly parted with 53k for a fully kitted vw with leather seats etc. We decided to rent one for a weekend just to try it out first.
We were glad we did, it was a shite weekend re weather. Which showed such a cramped motor in its true colours. Even if it had been a hot summer I think we'd have found it a waste of money, even with an awning.
Only my opinion as there are loads of happy campervanners out there.

Totally go with the above,we had a T25,more room than a T5 but it was too cramped, got a Autocruise now, small shower, toilet,Peugeot engine,it suits our needs better.

Having worked our way up in sizes, now downsizing from the XLWB TGE.
However for us it won’t be a camper interior but an open space. Staying on the MAN TGE platform but MWB.

Rent a T5 sized one before you buy one!
They are very restricted on storage / bed size etc…..

I know a lot of people have them, and love them but do have a look at small coachbuilts too.

Unfortunately my budget does stretch far enough cor the Vantage Neo

How about something like this? No connection at all to either, but went down a similar rabbit hole looking between a last gen Transporter / Marco Polo or something slightly bigger before deciding to do this year's tour on a bike instead and a couple of La Strada's popped up. The Germans seem to have a knack for this sort of thing.

I also ran across the Hymer 522 / Hobby Van - both similar size and a meter or so longer than a Transporter but with actual useable space. Something like the below?

I will be putting ours up for sale shortly. Built by me and a great mate of mine who's built 4 van conversions in the past he trained as a furniture maker and upholsterer. The van was bought new by NHS they ordered it with twin side doors and cab air con its just tipped over 100 k good service history bought the best of everything when I built it hundreds of hours work we have enjoyed it for 2 1/2 seasons did 1000 faultless miles round the south west end of may now up grading to MH 4 berth so we can take our little grandchildren away with us from time to time.

Very nicely done. :thumb2

Thanks for all the response so far. They are all much appreciated.
I fully get the notion that a van with a hi roof, a bit longer and kitted out with more would be a better option but atm I have a L1H1 transit van which is used sometimes as a daily driver and also for day trips away trips to the beach etc. or to head of with bicycles in the back.
The idea of a transporter sized campervan is to give us some more options for days away. Our sights atm are no more than exploring the local WAW (on our doorstep) with an option for an overnight or 2 should we fancy it.. Should we really get into the lifestyle I would then think about something bigger etc.

I'm currently following up on a of couple of options that have come up on here (thanks for that (y)). Still open for any other similar options

I like that a lot...we are also thinking of maybe trying one out !
Alas the camper van sale has been temporarily suspended as my mates wife's father passed away. They are busy dealing with more important life stuff for the time being 😩
