I've already got an imac laptop and we are probably going to switch over to iphones this week when our existing contract expires,

Q. The iPhone comes with unlimited internet / data but can that only be displayed on the phone or could it be displayed on the imac if the phone was plugged into it?

(One for Steptoe maybe :aidan

Sadly not, you can't use it as a 3G modem on a laptop. I think there is talk of the new software (iPhone 3.0) allowing it though - that's due in the summer at some point.

It is possible but you have to 'jailbreak' your iphone first

There was an app that allowed 'tethering' (I think that is what they called it) However it was removed from the app store as it contravened the AT&T reasonable use regulations. I have however seen it done to a iPhone that had been jail breaked. I was tempted but speeds with 3G are never that good through the iPhone and the vodaphone type 3G cards and dongles always seem faster for some reason.

Post if you do find a good solution as I could be tempted to try and I am due a new phone soon so the current one can be sacrificial...

i've heard tethering may be possible with the new v.3.0 iphone software coming next month, but it won't be part of your current data allowance.

very likely new iphones coming next month, or soon too.

Thanks guys, all very useful stuff. Now that I know the 'in phrase' I can do some more investigating.

"Actually, I'm fully tethered don't you know"

Sounds good to me.
