You might get cheaper but you are unlikely to get a better meachine and as good a support deal in the timescale you have - the HP is a safe buy with that warranty. If you expect to keep it for more than the warranty period buy the extended warranty and a spare battery in a year's time.

it was actually a fast silver one, but the time I got back to the shop it was so fast it had gone. Will have to wait a week for them to re-order so any comments on above spec, price etc still gratefully appreciated, here's waiting till next week then

With some time I'd take a look at Dell Outlet for whatyou want. Takes a bit of digging through but these are usually a few hundred below new price and good bargains.

Have a good hoke through www.acer.co.uk too. You can find laptops with a slightly lower spec (30Gb instead of 40Gb HDD etc.) for a heck of a sight less money.
