Can I run a 550 & 660 off one version of Mapsource?

I’ve had a Zumo 550 for a few years now and currently have CN Europe NT 2012.3 (Mapsource) on my computer.

I’ve now decided to buy a new Zumo 660, but will keep the 550 for my wife’s car.

The 660 (and DVD) will come with the latest maps. Will it be OK to just load the DVD on my computer and run both sat-nav’s off it, - I’ve got lots of files & POI’s that I would like to share between the two?

At this point in time I don’t really want to update the maps on my 550, but then again I don’t want to screw up either sat-nav or my files.

I hope you can understand what I’m trying to say here, - many thanks.

Should be fine. I have both my StreetPilot 2720 and Nuvi 765T on different mapping versions running of the same PC/Mapsource.

For some reason i cant run my zumo 550 and 60csx of my mapsource, any ideas why?

This will work fine UNTIL you create a route on your PC using the later mapset and then load that route into the 550 with an older mapset. It will work OK only if the route doesn't use roads (or road attributes) that are different to the 550's mapset.

+1,

I have difficulty uploading routes prepared for a 550 to my 660, the unit converts the route which mostly is no problem if a little time consuming with the occasional crash.

when that's happened to me*, the gps simply recalculates the route.

*often, as gamin's shoddy software frequently claims i'm using different map sets, when i'm not.

Always best to recalculate the route in Mapsource using the same mapping as on the GPS you're loading the route onto.

I have a Garmin Quest with old mapping (no street level maps of Ireland) couldn't buy, from Garmin, the later maps for the Quest :nenau

So I've bought a s/h Quest with City Navigator Europe 2008 so now have the later maps that I wanted :thumb

Tried to put those maps on to my earlier Quest, couldn't .... needs an unlock code!

Telephoned Garmin for an unlock code, trying to do it the right way, but they said I can't run two units off the same map :nenau

I don't believe 'em .... any suggestions welcome ;)

Seems like a well made and very valid point Mr Masters!

Would it be best to put the new Map into a separate directory? - I could then import/export information from one to the other, providing they be compatable.

I'm not sure what that would achieve as you can still select on MapSource the mapset you want to use to build a route.

If you're building a specifically route for your 550, simply select the relevant mapset before you start and it should be OK.

Bit of a minefield but Garmin are wrong when they say that you can't run two of their PNDs off one set of mapping data. What you need is two unlock codes for that mapping, what you asked them for essentially. They even used to offer a 2nd unlock code for free but that was pre. 2007. Regrettably, having ceased support for non NT mapping, they will no longer sell you an unlock code for love nor money.

You have a couple of choices:

There are means of generating a dodgy unlock code, can't cover that here though. Additionally, I think recent copies of Mapsource have made this difficult to implement.

The alternative is to use OpenStreetMap mapping data. It's pretty good, more detailed than the Garmin data in places. I have some running on my Nuvi and will be testing it over the next few weeks to assess it's suitability. Some of the advantages are that it's free and you no longer have to be bothered with all the unlock code shenanigans.

OSM should also be more current than the 2008 mapping that you have on your newer Quest.
