I have a MetaSystem IBC 1500 (allegedly an Intelligent Battery Conditioner)

The battery in my wife's Smart roadster is run down. [ironically my F650 engine is almost as big as the 698cc Smart motor]

Am I likely to do damage (to either car or charger) by using the bike charger on this car battery?

Thoughts?

Regards
Joe

No, it should be fine, although it might take longer to bring the battery up to a fully charged state than a car battery charger would.

Yes you can use it.

Will it work?
To charge the car battery? If the battery is small enough, in reasonable condition then Yes. If the batter is too big (AH) for the charger (amps) then it won't hurt it but it won't do it much good either.

Try it. I cannot see a semiintelegent bike charger doing any harm to a car battery.

You will not do any damage to the car battery, my only word of caution is based on similar experience with an optimate is that if the car battery is very very flat or knackered, it may make the charger work too hard and get very hot.( i thought it was intelligent)
So check on it after and hour or so just to be on the safe side

I sometimes leave my car in the garage for extended periods with an Optimate (two) connected using the supplied crocodile clips lead. No problems at all and keeps the battery fully topped up.
If the battery was well down on charge I would probably give it an overnight charge with a higher capacity car type charger first to get it somewhere close to fully charged as the Optimate may struggle in a situation like that.

I normally take the wheels off one side, leaving the hubs on toughened glass axle stands. This completely fools the so called intelligent charger and the battery's up to scratch in no time.

Wibble.

I used an Optimate on my mum's Megane to recharge the battery every time she left the bloody lights on. It could take up to 48 hours to restore to full charge, depending on how flat the battery was.

Always used an Optimate on the works mini bus. No problems with the charger and meant the bus would start after a long lay-off.
