Blokes (ladies),

My first domestic BM is about to be picked up (Whoop whoop..), and I've ordered a canbus connected power lead for my zumo 550 cradle.
I understand that the canbus connection plug is tucked up under the dash by the oil cooler.
My question is this ... presumably once snapped together, the power lead is pretty much there to stay and not something that you regularly plug and unplug. Is that about right?
Likewise, the cradle end of the power lead is a fit to cradle, screw home affair, again something that you don't really want to be connecting and un-connecting all the time.
My previous Pan 1300 had an easy jack plug power supply and the whole cradle and lead was a doddle to get out and install, and to then put away completely.
So do you guys leave the whole cradle permanently in situ?? is that a problem in the shit weather?? (I tend to use it for further afield trips but not for local hooning...), do you unplug at the canbus socket each time? unscrew at the cradle end and tuck the wire away each time?

Thanks in advance.... :)

I leave the whole cradle on - fitted on a 12GSA using TT lockable mount. I first used the canbus lead like your doing but have now fitted a switched fuse box and have wired the Zumo into that. I disliked the Canbus delay before it powered down the Zumo and I was always coming back to find the Zumo powered up or with dead batteries. In the switched fuse box as soon as I kill the ignition I get the "run on batteries" question and I can make an immediate choice.

I have had no problems with the cradle reliability and have had another fitted to a K1100 for nearly 3 years and again no issues.

:thumb ok, thanks for that. Didn't know about the delay on the canbus power lead so thats handy to know as well. thanks very much. :)

1. The power lead is permanently attached. No need to disconnect.

2. The cradle is permanently mounted. No need to take off.

3. The bike's peripheral electrics all stay live for a brief period (30 sec's / one minute, summat like that) when the bike's ignition is turned off.

When the bike's electrics finaly powers down, the Zumo should display:

'External power lost. Would you like to continue on internal batteries? Yes or No'. It then proceeds to countdown itself, defaulting to No (off) unless you have pushed, 'yes' in about 30 seconds or so.

When you turn the ignition on, the Zumo will automatically turn on, using the bike's power. When you push the bike's starter button, the Zumo will turn off very briefly (in fact it switches to its own internal batteries) while the bike switches all available power to turning the engine over and firing up. Reverting back to external power when the engine is ticking over.

It all works very well.

One good tip: The security screw on the standard Xumo 550 mount is a pain the arse to use. Buy a replacement from Migsel (UKGSer subscriber).

OK Thanks :thumb2. Guess I'll put it all together and just leave it all in situ. Now Wapping, I see you've up set little red rooster. Go and apologise ..... :D

Wapping's words are correct. I remembered now what was really causing my issue with the canbus cable. My bike has an alarm fitted and when this is switched on or off it also triggers the Canbus system for a second or two - enough to fire up the Zumo. The Zumo then just thinks it's switched on but on battery power so I either come back to the bike with the Zumo switched on or completely flat.

Ok, got that! I'll keep an eye on it. Thanks. :)
