Thats about it,

Think it is just websites with https:// at the beginning, so Hotmail, secure banking site, Microsoft Live etc.:thedummy

Have read and tried the following MS recommended fixes but none of them work. Article 813444 and 813442.

I am also having the same problem using firefox. The error message that comes up is "Page Cannot be displayed"

Would a re-install of IE work or does anyone have any ideas? My other laptop (XP SP2, IE6) is able to access all of the above sites.

I had the same problem with my bank, and discovered that my firewall was preventing "pop-ups" on that page. It was just a matter of altering that page's attributes.

Thanks for the replies, I will try them tonight. I have cleared the cookies and history but will check the port thing. The laptop that does work has Norton installed, this one has AVG. A funny ol game.

Will let you know what happens.

I opened port 443, tried hotmail and it worked. But I am still unable to access itunes download page, westpac banking site etc.

Turned off port 443 and could still access hotmail but again couldnt open the other websites.

So were getting there....

i have spat :thedummy again,

I thought I would try and use mozilla and login to hotmail through there but it didnt work, and now it wont work using IE either!

So back to square one...

Hi Shugie,

Downloaded the program and open in "Business Trial Version";

Traced from; My Computer
to; http:// www.ukgser.com
Port; 443

Then I cliked start and got the following message;

"the host ukgser.com could not be reached - it does not respond to visualroutes diagnostic packets. it also fails to repspond to http requests on port 443 indicating that the host and the network on which it lies are both down. The DNS was completed almost instantaniously......

Same thing happened trying to access other websites.....

Now what? (read the instructions?)

Are you using a software firewall, and if so have you allowed the sites in question ?

Have you checked the 'Security' settings for trusted sites, and also that no proxy server is selected, both in 'Internet options' ?

Are you using a router and if so are you connecting via ethernet cable or wifi ?

Port 443 is https, ukgser.com lives on port 80 'cos it's a normal website, ie not secure. You need to try one of your secure websites, will start https:// and then port 443.

Sorry about dragging this up again

Think i'm going to :mcgun myself. Just an update on the problem I have been having accessing secure sites with https:// at the start.

One of my laptops can access these sites even though port 443 is closed. When I add an exception as suggested by Fanum in Control Panel > Windows Firewall and add port 443 I still get the message that the port is closed even after restarting the machine.

If I get this problem only on 1 of two laptops connected wirelessly does it rule out problems with the router settings and mean that its definatley a problem with this laptop?

One other thing, tried to install IE V7 and it still happens. :( Poor me.

Thanks all in advance

get rid of all virus and firewall programs - especially zonealarm and norton.

and connect direct without a wireless link - use cable

then try again

just tried it motomartin and same results, i guess that means its nothing to with the router ehy. cheers gazzr

Windows Firewall is a red herring - the exception applies to Incoming connections - https makes an Outgoing connection on a *random* port on your machine to port 443 on the machine you are trying to access.

Thanks for the tips. I have covered some of the points in the article but not all of them. I think part of the problem is my lack of knowledge about setting up the router/network. I think I need a dummies book or something to find out about how it all works. Its probably made more difficult cause I have a wireless router so I might take that out of the equation and just use a cable from thee modem. One less thing to go wrong.

Also with IP addresses I seem to have about 5 different addresses. One for the router, one each for the laptop and then one for the ISP. Add that to the hoo haa about port openings, proxy settings, firewalls and the usual MS bugs its no wonder its never easy.

Anyway thanks for the reponses. Im off to the book shop.:thumb2
