Anyone know what the swastikas and inverted swastikas are for on that memorial. I've never seen that before on any war memorials.

THE BALMORAL WAR MEMORIAL

Unveiled by KING GEORGE V on 3rd September 1922

Dedicated in memory of the men from the estates in the area who gave their lives in the Great War.

The swastika was a symbol of widespread ancient useage associated with the sun and its name is from Sanskrit denoting well being, fortune and luck. The symbol appeared on the buildings and title pages of many of Rudyard Kiplings works. The symbol had no sinsiter associations at the time the memorial was designed.

Thanks for that.

It was the 1939-45 inscription beneath this that threw me. The names alongside the swastikas are obviously from WW1.
