I have down loaded Garmin Express and registered it and fitted a 16GB card but when I try to update it - it 'downloads' the software but then gives the following error

! There was an error installing the update.

Any clues before I chuck in into the bin?

Oh I am running Windows 7 Professional at work.

I beileve there's a firmware update for Nav V. Have you installed that first?

That's where it fails on the initial firmware update and gives the message above.

Just done mine ! took less than a minute although the first thing that happened was a message saying there was a problem connecting to garmin server !
Perhaps too many peeps are trying to do it and its overloaded !

Chuck it in the bin then. In fact send it to me and I'll do that for you. I'll PM you my address.

I will take my frustration out on it first by smashing it!

Tried several times on and off this morning and same result - maybe it is something to do with network, who knows but life is far to short to be wasted on shitty software - I will take it to my dealer and get them to try it and replace it if necessary.

No need to do that. Send it to me and I'll send you a stuffed dummy of David Cameron (which will, by definition, be ultra realistic - I was going to say lifelike but that would be being ridiculous) by return of post. You can smash that until your heart's content.

Good luck with that dealers know even less than Garmin and very much doubt they will replace it cos you is a numpty !

Have you got basecamp installed ?
If so plug the Nav into computer with basecamp open and once dicovered you will get a notification that there is an update.
Try doing the update through basecamp

No this is a brand new unit that came with the bike - procedure is download Garmin Express - run it - register it - once registered successfully (which it did) it informs me that there are updates available - click on install all - tells me it will take 1 hour 23 mins (includes latest maps as well as software I guess) - start installation, software downloads to computer or so it says - trys to update unit and fails after about 20 seconds with the message in my first post.

They will either fix it or replace it I am sure - its a BMW product :)

Ok try this

When garmin express opens up and tells you you have updates click on the advanced options bit and in the first instance just do the firmawre update
then for the maps again click advanced options and do them seperately for the device and the computer.

I think that by trying to do all at once you are confusing it ! The firmware should take no longer than 2 minutes or so to download and install
Maps do take longer

One of the first things I tried - still didn't work, interestingly the back up worked and the registration worked so the unit is probably OK - my guess is that it is the protection on our LAN that's stopping me from downloading the files from Garmin - will have to dig out my crappy little note notebook and try again at home.

What computer are you using? Garmins don't like being connected via a USB hub, which is what seems to be fitted on desktop machines with front panel USB ports. The front USB connectors on my admittedly ancient Hewlet-Packard will trash a Garmin map update in minutes whereas the rear connectors are fine. If you're on a modern laptop the above is probably irrelevant.

I've had trouble doing Garmin speed camera updates using internet explorer and had to use Firefox! Might be worth a try?

I have tried both sets of USB ports on my work Windows 7 Professional Dell Precision Computer and non of them work - I a, pretty certain that isn't is either the virus checker that cannot be turned off and/or our protections systems the LAN.

Mate, can your work machine become totally independent of their network? I can't install any updates for various Tom Toms and Garmin stuff at work because it's so locked down, although I can initial download stuff, it won't install.

However, if you have installed Garmin express on it, yours is obviously letting you download and install.
If you can rule that out then the other options I would double check are those already pointed out, especially clicking on the advanced options and doing one thing at a time.
After using Garmin hardware since I was 16 I can say with total confidence, that it has not got any better. Same issues for people for years and years and years!
