Anyone know of a good Car gearbox repairer/recon place in the west mids, ideally close to Warwick/Coventry?

MrsDave G/box has been getting harder and harder to engage gears and the garage today said new g/box time. Looking at options at the moment, hence want to speak to a specialist rather than the garage who have said, we'd just replace the whole box.

Does depend on the car but most places will fit another gearbox, either recon or new. Stripping and repairing a box themselves means taking the box apart, checking all gears, sychros, selectors, bearings etc, ordering in the parts, waiting for delivery, rebuilding and refitting the box. That's assuming they have technicians with the skill and knowledge anyway. Costs cannot be predicted until the box is apart and there is always the possibility that one part will be out of stock causing further delays.

A recon box (not one that has just been painted!) is usually the best option. The price of the box is fixed and on most vehicles it can be fitted within a day. In 30 years of running my repair business can only recall a full rebuild on one gearbox (Citroen Mehari 4X4). We replaced a lot of sychros and the occasional bearing because we knew just what the problem was so if someone actually knows what is wrong with your box a repair might make sense. As we only worked on Citroen and Pugeot cars we often had a fair idea of what was causing the problem-maybe you could find someone who knows this vehicle really well. You don't say when or which gears are difficult to engage. I assume they have checked that the clutch actually clears!
