It tells me I have to update it so I do
It then tells me that I dont have enough memory to do the updates.

Trip to the shops - correct card inserted.

The unit recognised the SD card ( as does TomTom home) - but it still wont allow me to update as I haven't enough space.

So I take of the maps - still won't let me update

I have reset it 4 or 5 times , still does the same.

So, I think , fuck it, i wont update it - so I load the maps back onto the unit. It won't let me - because there is not enough space ...

For some reason the unit is not recognising the correct free space ...

It has about 30 mins before going into the bin ... any suggestions

I also used to use an old 720, and did exactly as you describe above. BUT I also could not get enough on the internal memory, So, I had to put the whole of GB on the internal memory and then put Western Europe on the card.
This, of course, means that you have to select the W.E. maps when sallying forth on the continent. But it all worked out for me.
Tom Tom allow you to download 'parts' of Europe to your sat nav to which ever drive you select.

I have put all of WE on a 4 GB card ...
And it still won't load the updates - even though the unit is 2 GB lighter !!

It seems that this is a common problem when updating Garmin and Tom Tom maps.

Me thinks its a plot to make you buy a new sat nav.
