so my dad recently picked up a BMW RT and needs a new helmet. he has neck issues which are exacerbated by doing 200 miles in day with the weight of a helmet. in the last few months he's bought a caberg open face and a new shoei multi-tec, but they are both too heavy. ideally it needs to be 1kg or less and there is a BM one for £900 but only one left in the UK. it's apparently perfectly weighted with 55/45 back to front (or something?:eek) but just none available. can anyone shed any light on a good way forward on this in terms of other makes or whatever that are VERY light? he'd rather pay more and get the right helmet than have to sell the new bike!! i told him i'd tap up the wealth of knowledge on here and see if y'all can help. with thanks in anticipation...:aidan

I can recommend ...

... the Bell M4R Carbon helmet as advertised here, although I should add that I paid substantially less than the price quoted on the linked site. The visor is a revelation in itself, 3.5mm thick and no distortion, unlike the previously owned System 5.

My only grumble is the the mesh chin guard looks tatty after a year of conflict with the velcro on my suit, and the upper vents are difficult to open/close with gloves on. Other than that I'm very happy with it and am pleased to report that the lack of weight (1kg) does make a difference :D

There are several options -

the BMW one is a superb helmet - very expensive but you are hardly aware that it's there even after an 800 mile day - "deals" are available but you might need to pay nearer the asking price if they have to order one from Germany .

the Bell unit looks good , approx £200 , though the shell is a different shape to Arai / Shoei , and he'd need to try it on - I found the chinbar to be too close to my nose .

There are several even lighter carbon helmets out there - "Trials" helmets @ approx £90 , but he would have to be happy wearing goggles and find one approved for road use - worth a try though .

All the best , Jim .
