I’m planning on a trip to Carcassonne at the end of June were I’ll meet the wife who’s flying in.
We’re looking at spending 5 days there and as she suffer’s with a bad back I was just wondering if anyone could recommend any “must see/do” places which can be reached by public transport.

You can spend a whole day strolling around the ancient Cité.

The Aude Gorge to the south of Quillan, D118 etc is very scenic - why not hire a car for a day if she is not riding?

Things to see and do

As Wessie says, hire a car.

Alternatively, use Google maps to find out how long public transport takes to get to where you might want to go. Or stroll down to the train / bus station and see what places they serve.

If you have a hire car there are some nice little costal villages to the south, Colliour is nice although busy in the high season

A bit further down, just into Spain there is Cadaqués and the Salvador Dali house museum if you’re into that kind of thing

Colliour…..

I haven’t been there since I was about 10 or a bit younger, when it was still a small fishing village. I remember being thrilled as Jacques Cousteau was there, with his yellow diving submarine thing, which we got to look at.

Great area and we are often down there on the bikes. We stay at the Hotel Bristol in town, opposite the canal du Midi, and walk around the citi at the top. Love to go a bit further and visit Port Vendres, a nice walk from Collieure. Cap Bear is also a short walk from Port Vendres and is full of WW2 German defences, mostly intact, entrance is free and you are able to climb on anything that you want.

If you delay it for a couple of weeks, Bastille Day in Carcassonne is one of the best events I’ve seen, with the old Chateau Comtal being a stunning backdrop. The Cité itself is a bit cliched and Disneyfied for my liking but it’s still worth a visit if you’re in the area.
It will probably be hot so aircon will be helpful and, if you hire a car for a few days, use the underground car park at Gambetta.

Another vote for going up to the castle. I enjoyed it and I don’t do much in the way of history.

Definitely going to look at hiring a car for a couple of days. Perhaps head for a day on the coast, weather permitting.

A Michelin Green Guide, will have everything you need and more. Just make sure you buy the correct region or it will be a very long bus ride.

We stayed just outside Carcassonne a few years ago at B&B Dochavert. Highly recommended and only a 20 minute walk to the old city.

If we ever go back we'd stay there again.
