.... I know very little about Harley's . I'm getting a bit of a yearning for one though.
Looking on Chester Harley's website I've spotted a less than 2k mies CVO fat Bob in flake orange. It's up at 14.7k and is. 2010 model comes with 12 months warranty.
Could anyone offer an opinion on the type (model ) Harley and if its good value. Not sure of how much these were in 2010. I'm looking for comfort, some get up and go, with some touring capability.
Would I regret the fat bob and wish I'd gone for another model ?

Personally I think the fat bob models look great, just not sure about the Cvo models, they tend to be very garish. But! If it floats your boat and you can afford it go for it.

OK.

I've been looking at the CVO and although it looks nice it wouldn't be for me, but then its not my money!

CVO means Custom Vehicle Order. Basically Harley's high end, all the bling, and you have to have the 'special' colour... Remember, you will sell it on at some stage, and the CVO really narrows down your market in my opinion.

Some things you need to decide,

1. Your budget. You will get a lot of touring HD for 6k, why spend more? 6k will buy you a nice Glide (1340 EVOLUTION ENGINE) or for a bit more (8-9k) you could get a 1458 twin cam road king.

2. What do you want to do on it? If you are wanting to tour, 2 up, then definately look at a Road King. There are a couple of versions, Custom or Classic. The Custom has hard luggage while the Classic has leather hard luggage. The Classic is, in my opinion, a better looking bike, plus later 1458 twin cams have more bits as standard (cruise control for 1). If you will be riding mostly on your own, with very occasional pillion, and an average journey of about 100 miles or less, consider a Softail. Softail's look like a hard tail but the suspension is hidden. FatBoy is a softail, also google images for Softail Deluxe..:drool:drool

Once you have decided how much you want to spend and what you want it for the rest is easy.

There will undoubtably be someone along with more knowledge of the lettering (FLH/FLR/FLS ETC...) but to be honest it don't mean much, plus you won't remember it in the shop...

PM me your No if you want to chat about it.

Steve.

Why not?

Just buy a Pneumatic drill!

Same noise levels, same vibration levels, but you don't need to wear a helmet, though a yellow hard hat will probably be forced on you.

The evos are the airheads of the harley world. The chances of getting a decent one is a bit of a lottery. If I had the choice (ie enough wonga) I'd buy the newest bike I could get my hands on, it would have to be at least a 2010 and just ride it. I've just been through the pain barrier on what appeared to be a well sorted evo and now have a bike that runs as well as it can, its been a lot of frustration though as lack if time meant I wanted something I could just ride, instead I've spent a lot of time in the garage instead of riding.

Great bike Captain, but don't bother with the CVO. Get gloss black and fit a stage one, that's essential if you want sound and fun :thumb2 They ride great, its reliable and is in my oppinion the best of the bunch from HD.

Spoke to a HD 'expert' before I bought mine, he said dont buy anything built after 2007 as the things rust before your eyes...

Some of the ones i have seen convince me he is right...:blast

CVOs are very much in demand from the polishing freaks of the HD world. Having said that I've seen the Glides with big mileage on them, but only the Glides. They have Screamin' Eagle engines, loads of extra chrome, fancy paint jobs and sometimes sound systems. They are an acquired taste, but if you want 'look at me' type bikes you can get something more individual by throwing money at a good quality custom shop :nenau

If you want to tour you can, of course, bolt on panniers and a screen to almost every HD. There are 'detachable' kits that allow you to strip off all the kit on Softails and Dynas to quickly get the stripped down look back

To tour properly, especially two up, then a big Glide is what you'll need (not a Superglide, that's actually a Dyna :blast). Essentially they are all the same bike, however RoadKings are the chromed up version with a Perspex screen and a massive headlight. ElectraGlides come in a confusing range of versions from 'Classic' to 'Ultra' but they have the Batwing fairing and hard panniers and TourPak. StreetGlides are ElectraGlides without a TourPak (top box to you). There are CVO versions of all three. :rob

You can spend what you want on a Harley and it won't necessarily get you a better bike. Condition and service certificates are worth more than age. Chrome is worth nothing and custom paint jobs (except CVO) actually reduce the value. The key thing is if you buy well you'll not loose much so take good advice. I'd buy privately as little goes wrong :thumb2

2005 Glides are about as new as my local Indie would buy, he mutters darkly about newer gear boxes ;)

Yep well I your man with the knowledge, CVO is custom vehicle operations, it is run as a seperate company from Harley and they produce a very limited number and as such dont have to abide by the same rules as a volume producer. In effect they can produce the bike that they would like and others do.

So it comes out of the factory with the, FI, exhaust, cam etc etc etc mods all done.
You will always get your money back they are always in short supply, and not normaly a problem selling them. If thats the sort of money your spending then its a better buy than any normal harley.

Unless you have any particular desire for a newish one then I would agree that a 1450 is a better bike, the 1340 is ok and I have a couple but the brakes are crap and getting parts for some of the range is starting to get difficult, (ok mine are FXR's). The early 1450 twincams are the best the carb'ed ones, but after that a CVO bike will be a cracker, and given the spec you will come out ahead on the money front.
