Hi,
I am not sure how many people were reading this part of the forum, so I posted this in the General Banter part.
There's a time issue to it: we need some names on a petition ASAP.

I posted this:

Hi Guys and Gals,
There's some stuff going on in the Horizon's Unlimited Forum about UK issued Carnets by the RAC for travel outside the EU.
http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hubb/trip-paperwork/carnet-de-passage-uk-rac-68191-7#post489550

Quite a few people have had issues with getting the RAC to issue a Carnet, and then with how they have administered it.
You can read the details on the thread.
It's incredibly expensive.
Plus the RAC makes lots of mistakes.
If you compare the RAC to the German ADAC in issueing a Carnet it's ridiculous: the ADAC refunds all your deposit after you get back, and the RAC wants a bigger deposit, and keeps 50% of it!!

We're trying to get some improvements from the RAC, and a UK guy (in a Landie) who's on a round world trip is in Colombia, and is raising a petition to try to get some action:

https://www.change.org/p/fia-break-the-monopoly-treat-travellers-better-rac-carnet

We have 70 names, and want to exceed 100. So if you think you might be affected, please check out the petition.

Thanks,
Alan

Many thanks to all those who have supported the petition to the RAC & Others (FIA, CMA, FCA, EU Commission)

The RAC Complaints Department and the CEO have received & read the petition, and a detailed letter of complaint. They have promised to respond in the first week of January.

We now have 380 signatures which is fantastic, thank you,

We are not expecting a positive response from the RAC, we will need to take it one step at a time through each organisation.

The more signatories we have on the petition the more likely it is that the organisations will start listening, so please do keep sharing and if you have not signed it already, it would be great if you could.

Any media buzz you can create would be beneficial to show these organisations that we are not backing down on this…

Many thanks for all your support.

Signed -I agree the carnet siutation is ludicrous, it would havfe cost us £3-4k just for the carnet for New Zealand!

Carnet carnage - no relief in sight?

Afraid it has not got any better, based on my investigations this week.

Once the RAC bailed out, it was possible to get a carnet issued by the courteous and efficient ADAC for 200ish euros.

However on 1 July a new player in the UK was recognised by FIA as the issuer of carnets for UK registered vehicles.

Sounds good in principle until you find out:

1. a carnet quote for my elderly 1150GS worth less than £2,000, was £700!

2. ADAC will no longer issue carnets for uk registered vehicles as (their words) 'we were just helping out after RAC exited'.

A quick phone around this morning to other European motoring organisations (Holland and France) has produced no joy so far.
