I'm thinking of fitting cast wheels on my 03gs I know there have been threads on this. Is it worth doing, where would be the best place to source wheels any advice would be helpful.

i am looking at an 1150 with cast wheels and rather spoked hahaha

if i buy it ill tell you what its like

Is it worth doing

Simple answer, Yes, depending what you want from the bike, I did mine years ago....

Motorworks is a good place to start with for a set, their chap called 'Nord' is in the know as to what you would need to convert... :thumb

Alfie,

I have the full kit you would need to put cast wheels on your 03GS, no longer needed as I don't have the GS anymore

Black powered coated
tyres
speedo thingy
longer/shorter bolts as needed
carbon front and rear mad guards

you'd just need to add discs, I used the nes from the wired wheels since they were already on the bike so would match the pads

PM if you want details

Heres a >>LINK<< to a good thread thats list all you eed to know

cheers

any advice would be helpful.

ABS can be dodgy. I did it to my last GS and everything was fine and dandy, except the pressed-steel ABS rings used on the cast wheels seemed to give the (non-servo) ABS controller a problem.

Symptoms were: ABS pump could be heard working a lot more at lower speeds and, at speeds in excess of about 80-90 mph (on the track of course :toungincheek), the ABS warning lights started flashing and the ABS needed to be reset.

I cured it by removing the ABS unit. Otherwise a good conversion if you only use your bike on the road. Bridgestone BT-023s highly recommended, although a lot on here seem to like Michelins, which I don't, due to their poor wet performance.

Good luck! :beerjug:

Did my 1100 few years ago and now sold the spokes as I won`t be changing back.
Positives;-
Better turn in
Lowers the bike a tad
Huge tyre choice
So easy to clean

Negatives;-
None for me as I would never take it off road.

Nor me, intentionally...:thumb

Funny you should say it like that, but I was being followed to a meet by someone on an 1150 Adv with the standard wheels/tyres. When I got there, the guy behind me wasn't behind me, IYKWIM, so I waited a minute or two & set off to retrace the last couple of miles since I'd seen him. He came around the final corner to the pub, just as I set off, but he had long grass hanging off the engine & bars. He had tried keeping pace with me on alloys & BSB race tyres & found the front tucked on one of the corners, so he picked the bike up, ran straight across the road, up the kerb & through the long grass before being ready to return to the road. I didn't think I was going particularly fast but it seems that it wasn't too easy to keep up... I'll stick to the alloys, thanks. :green gri

Tried it for a few months, looked nice, white aloys on a white 'n blue GSA.

Went on holiday with the aloy's, steering was good, as it has always been. Did the Jullierpass, road works forced me to do a bit of unpaved and nearly lost the front of the bike :eek

The slightly better steering doesn't counter the complete loss of being able to do any all-road, so sold the aloy's.

Besides, have a 21" at the front now, suits me better :D

Grtz, Philip!
