I am new to this sophisticated site so excuse any errors but I am looking for a used R1150GS and have passed up a few which looked like bargains as they were catagory "D" insurance write-offs; these bikes had been repaired and had a 3 month warranty.
Due to costs I am thinking this is the way to go but would appreciate any advice regarding anything I should look out for and whether a Cat "D" write off is a viable proposition, I have owned ex car write offs in the past without problem, even rebuilt a few myself, but bikes are an alien world to me............
Though a novice biker my first bike was a 2000 R1150GS on which I covered 15,000 kms. around Australia in 6 weeks but since then have been bikeless and am suffering withdrawal symptoms :Catrun

This was a Category ' D' write off in a previous life...

I have no idea what price comes in as acceptable to you but I was in Prestige yesterday and this was available

BMW R1150GS
99 V
Mandarin, SPYBALL Alarm. Sebring Exhaust, Hugger, 1 Owner.

£4500
It looked very clean and tidy, ddn't notice mileage but this was no minger - it was marked up as trade which I presume means no warranty but that's still a lot of bike for no money.

Only play the 'trade' or 'Cat D' game if you are confident in what you're looking at or can take someone who is and knows their onions. Buyer Beware :grndevil

Hi Roger, my own bike is/was a write off, plus i buy them for spares, i've seen cat"D" with just rocker cover damage, and some nearly in half. see if you can find out the previous extent of damage, if the seller has rebuilt it, get it in writing, and speak to the previous owner, you'd be surprised how many extras you pick up this way, people give you panniers, tank bags etc that they had in the garage. i always take pictures of mine if i'm going to rebuild them. BUT don't pay no where near normal price, if its on the write off/damaged register you'll never be able to P/X it at a main bm dealer, or sell it on again for sensible money, but if you just want a cheap bike and are going to keep it for along time then jump in; just remember to check it over more thoroughly then you perhaps might, and definatley test ride it.

:)

ive seen it its been there 4 at least 6 months get the reg it might have belonged 2 someone on this site:green gri

category D write-offs

The first bike I saw was at Beemer motorcycles and was a one owner 02 reg. Blue/White R1150GS 17,000 miles, supplied by Vines of Guildford, Registration Number HY02 SDV with service history for £5595 but it has recently sold, as did the 01 Reg. same spec for £4850. I may have either missed a bargain or a lemon! They are expecting another one in soon but don't have any details as yet but will probably go to have a look.

Write offs.

Mine's an 02 1150GS with under 6000 miles on the clock but in my mind it's a write off.

Why?

Because I dropped it and scuffed the mirror so it's no longer perfect in my mind.

Guess it's the way you perceive the bike....
