Just won this on Flea bay - 2004 CCM 404 DS. Less than 1,000 miles on the clock, super moto wheels, years MOT and tax - £2,100 :thumb

Aparently been in someones shed for last 3 years

Had a look at it this afternoon and pick it up in the morning.

I have had a Suzuki DRZ400S in the past and so know what the engine is like etc.

Anyone got any experience of the CCM 404 i.e. anything to look out for etc.

Thanks

It has more grunt than the 'S' due to higher compression, pump carb and clearer pipe.
The only trouble I heard of was one bike having generator failure. The windings just feel to pieces!
Apart from that, nowt. A good strong engine.

Enjoy it dude.

Oh, by the way, did you get the trail wheels (21/18) with it?
If so, get them on and come down to Wales for a trail ride.....:thumb

Timpo.

Timpo.

Only came with Super moto wheels - done alot of green laning in the past in Derbyshire etc on DR250S/DR350S/DRZ- may get round to doing some more in the future but not this year.

Always thought that would be a top bike. KTM suspension and DRZ engine. I rode on once and liked it a lot.

Enjoy!

Good find

Been watching a couple of those coming up on biketrader becuase of the DS aspect ie 2 set of wheels. Funny, I never use ebay so i didn't think to look on there :blast

Wasn't sure what they were like though because I've never met anyone who owned one. I remember sitting on one in a delaers when they first come out and IIRC it was pretty bloody tall on the off road wheels.

You'll have to keepp us updated :thumb

It's a good un

Got is back home yersday in the rain and gave it a service.

Oil, filter, changed brake fluid (back brake was particularly bad), cleaned spark plug (luckly the plug spanner off a Falco fitted), lubed chain, fitted some crash bobbins I had hanging around the garage and gave it a general check over. Tyre pressures way too low etc.

Took it out for a run at lunchtime today and handling is sweet, no vibes from the engine and revs out in top at an indicated 102 MPH at which point the rev limiter is just kicking in. Despite it being very windy the WP suspension kept the bike tracking true with no hint of a weave :thumb

Next job is to check and clean the brake calipers and the air filter followed by starting to tidy it us. Some corrosion on the frame brackets etc to sort as well as braek discs and the nipples on he wheels - may get them respoked over winter.

So far so good

Make sure the airbox mod has been done, the rivets come loose holding it together and get ingested into the engine wrecking the valves.

I have a 644DS, and a couple of mates have the 404DS. As you've already found, the CCM Riders site is a font of knowledge and the few problems there are have all well documented on there.

As you've also already found the quality of finish is not the best in the world, spoke nipples and frame finish are particularly appalling. The other weak area is electrics. I don't know whether the wrong farme dimensions were sent to the loom maker or CCM were just tight, but there just doesn't seem to be enough wire in places.

Two common failure points on the 404 are up by the headstock and behind the side panel cover over the frame rail. The wiring can chafe through at both these points cutting the electrics, so worth a look.

Also worth looking at the sidestand bracket, I've heard of 3 or 4 recently snapping of the frame without warning (including my mates) so worth a close inspection of the weld at that point. My mate had just got off his bike at work and was walking away when it just broke of asnd his bike toppled over onto the floor.

Off road wheels sets come up fairly often on ebay and fetch about £200/250 so worth having, but make sure they come with longer sidestand and the shorter brake caliper bracket as buying seperately bumps up the price as these two items are much harder to find seperately.

DRZ engine is generally reliable, weak points being the very thin magnesium engine cases which can hole very easily in a topple over as the levers run so close. It's worth radiusing the shap point off the back of the gear lever to help. CNC machined bond on protection plates are cheaply available (about a tenner I think) on ebay, and worth fitting for peace of mind.

The other two are the gearbox output shaft spacer corrodes and leaks oil, again stainless ones cheaply available on ebay, and the timing chain tensioners can fail, obvious as engine goes very noisy and clattery, but once again, aftermarket manual tensioners cheaply available on ebay.

Otherwise, great fun, cheap to buy and vastly under-rated. Suzuki engine, quality brakes and suspension, English frame - apart from the crap finish, what's not to like.

Enjoy :) :)
