I got fed up with my keys putting scratches on the bar between the clamps and had always fancied some kind of carbon-fibre protector, but I couldn't find one. So I bought 0.5 metre of 28.5mm internal diameter CF tube from here
http://www.carbonology.com/carbon-tube-over-12mm-od-285mm-id-313mm-od-c-64_76_100.html

I cut a bit to length and cut out a 10mm strip so that it would snap over the bar. At £22, it's a bit expensive, but I have a use for the left over tube :thumb
I reckon you can get eight protectors out of a 0.5 metre tube, so if a group get together, these can be done for £3 a piece.

A lot less trouble

My ignition key attaches to the rest of my keys with a small quick release shackle (for a sailing dinghy) and I always remove the rest of the bunch and put them in my pocket.

Same kind of thing for me. Ride with the ignition key only. Padlock the bike up and put the lock key on bike keyring. If I have more than one key in the ignition, there is a fecking lock on the bike somewhere :blast none of this plastic cordy thingy going from lock to throttle stuff :nenau looks very sad IMHO.

But I do like the carbonfibre look mind. It would look a treat on my previously owned Transalp :augie, the previos owner must of been a jailer or something :D

To be helpful, Brian, how about posting a link to a supplier of the sort of "quick release shackle" you're talking about? :) Is this the sort of thing

To be fair, I don't really think your solution is "a lot less trouble" because all I had to do was make three hacksaw cuts and the job's done for life.

I use this I find it also helps with not wearing away at the pocket linings but the Carbon Fibre solution looks pretty nifty :thumb

if the CF firmly fixed to bar or does it move a bit? because i suspect if it moves slightly it will wear the paint away and could also become a water trap....???

A small piece of scotchcal would be better i think??

Yes, exactly that except the small simplest one is fine. the key ring with other keys is on the fixed eye and the ignition key slips on or off the swivelling part. Ideal!

Good point. Mine doesn't move at all because I had previously tried sticking those little "carbon effect" patches to the bar. Bad idea! They kept unravelling after a couple of days. Fortunately, however, they left a bit of their glue behind and this is enough to hold the tube solidly in place.

The diameter of the bar is 28mm and the internal diameter of this tube is 28.5mm, so a little dab of any glue-type substance should do the job! :thumb2

My solution

Found it in a drawer in the house so I've no idea where it came from, but a Google search for detachable keyring came up with similar stuff.

Don't think there will be any problem with a water trap as I made up a similar fix using a small piece of cable tidy tubing (think it was a £1 or so from Ikea for 2 metres :thumb ). Its been on for a year and I just checked underneath it and no problems whatsoever.

I have a my disklock key and Medic Aid tube on my ignition keys. I use one of the detachable key rings for attaching the rest of my bike keys if I need them.

So for anybody that does have keys attached to their ignition keys you now have either a cool Carbon Fibre or a cheapy Basic solution to stop key scratching. :thumb

Exceptional value and not at all unattractive, in my opinion :thumb2 It looks appropriately rugged to suit the GS style. Well done mate.

well I am with Malcvtr, you can take all your key rings and little wallet things etc etc, Carbon fibre is just cool, so anything cheap with carbon fibre involved is worth it in my book.

Now that looks remarkably similar to the diameter of my mates fishing rod, he will never miss a short bit off the end, and he never uses the whole length of the rod anyway, plus he is on deployment in Canada at the moment and it will be at least 3 months before he notices !!!
