I've been considering options, other than more/bigger CF (admittedly the cleanest easiest solution) or carrying a laptop, for uploading more maps, changing map sets and/or capturing my track recordings form my 2610.

I carry a 40GB MP3 player/photo storage unit to which I can attach a CF reader. I'll try it ASAP, but I wondered if anyone else had thought of loading the 256CF through the GPS with for example a single coutnry or combination, then uploading the file to another location (my mp3 player) to be recovered to the CF as needed on route?

I appreciate this does not address the capture of my track detail.

Who cares eh?!

I'll let you know......

It works.

So I will now crete several map sets, move them via the 256mb CF card in the 2610 to my Archos MP3/Storage and return them to the card as and when I need.

Nice one.

:D

Answering my own posts feels like thinking out loud. The kind of thinking out loud were you hope someone will interject and save you having to apply the final peice of thought to what ever reasoning it is you are muddling over!! :D

It's the older AV320 (with a 40GB home upgrade). It's chunky/ugly but funtctionally very nice.

They are great bits of kit. Being able to carry video about rather music was a key driver for my purchase.

Then came MP4 on the fly and the ability to drive my bullet cam to it.

Photo storage.

MP3

And now there is the storage of map sets to upload to CF for the 2610.

I had to replace the battery a couple of months ago, wouldn't hold a charge. but in fairness I'll have had it 2 years in August, and have used it heavily.

You have come up with a clever idea, and you could make it work very easily.

If you stuff a CF card from a Garmin GPSR (e.g. 26xx) into a CF card reader of a computer and have a look at the contents, you will find that the CF card contains a folder entitled 'Garmin', and within that folder there is a single file which is a compilation of the map segments that you chose to save to the card. If you have a small capacity card (e.g. 256 megs) and want to tour all of Europe, without lugging a laptop, here is how you could do it:

1) Create a mapset for a given area - for example, UK and France, I think that's about 250 megs - then save it to your CF card in the conventional manner. Now, copy the contents of the CF card to your MP3 player, and rename the folder "UK and France".

2) Repeat the process until you have all of Europe covered - this will probably result in 4 or 5 mapsets.

3) When you want to use a mapset in your GPSR, copy the contents of the folder (the single mapset file within the "UK and France" folder of your MP3 player) into the "Garmin" folder of your GPSR's CF card. Don't rename the Garmin folder, and obviously, don't rename the mapset file.

4) When you want to change to a different mapset, just delete the mapset file that is within the Garmin folder of your GPSR's CF card, and replace it with a new mapset, as described in step 3.

Hope this helps,

Michael
