With the new 800GS having a chain, but still an 'adventure bike', makes me wonder why it doesn't have a fully enclosed chain-guard to keep out the muck? And what happened to chain enclosures anyway, I remember having one on my Honda CD175 (not a bike to remember...:P) 30 yrs ago, but they seem to have disappeared off bikes now - is it just fashion, because they would seem to be very practical, particuarly if riding on trails etc to keep the sand, mud, salt etc off the chain - let it last longer. Any ideas?

Unfortunately chain covers rarely do keep all the muck out, but they certainly will keep any muck that gets in there in. :mmmm

All a bit before my time :), but didn't chain covers disappear when o-ring chains appeared??

My recent chain driven bikes have given a good 20k / chain, which is OK in my book.
