Can anyone confirm the amount of links needed on the chain for the Funduro?

I've recently been had by a guy on ebay selling chain and sprocket kits that he claims fit both the Funduro and the GS 01-04.

The sprockets are correct but the chain he sends is only 110 links. After opening the pack and trying to fit the thing I then discover it's too short, and when I looked on the workshop CD I discover it's meant to be 112 links. Of course now I've opened the pack, I'm unable to send it back for exchange because it's been soiled.

He now claims that it's very odd that we need 112 links on our bike as all other 650gs's only need 110. Even his mate who works 'so he says' for a BW dealer confirms it should be a 110 link.

I know better, I called NOG and they confirm I need 112 links.

I'm not going to disclose the guys name just yet because I haven't finished our little disagreement.

First though I'd like a little help from one of you Funduro owners to confirm for me how many links your chain should have, preferably as specified by BW.

Then I can get back to the business of telling this FkWhit what I think of his business plan to dispose of a whole load of useless/unusable chains (They have narrower pins than standard chains, so can't even be extended).

Sorry, rant over for now.

Can I suggest that if anyone is planning to buy a chain and sprocket kit on ebay, that you might like to PM me first for the guys name so you don't fall into the same trap.

PS: I've now ordered a propper chain from Gregg M.

According to my reference notes, the 94-98 model years took a 520/110 chain.

From 99 onwards (including GSs and Dakars) the chain is a 520/112.

I hope that helps.

According to bitzforbikes.com it's a 110 linker

The gospel according to f650.com

Chain Specifications

You need a 520 type chain for the F650 model bikes. 520 means 5 eighths of an inch between the pins and 2 eighths of an inch (i.e. 1/4") between the plates. There are some good ideas in the Chain and Sprockets FAQ on how to ensure you have the correct chain length. You can also check the 15T and Other Sprockets FAQ for a table containing the number of links you will need on a bike with different sized sprockets. However, for a stock 47T/16T sprocket setup (on all bikes), you will require:

* 110 links on the F650 Classic and ST
* 112 links on the F650 GS and Dakar
* If you make an 18" rear wheel change on the GS you need to make the chain 114 links instead of the standard BMW 112 links. This isn't a problem as the chains typically come 120 links then you shorten them. DHP #711

Most chain manufacturers recommend a maximum engine capacity for their chains. For the F650 you want a chain rated to at least a 650cc capacity, or a little bit more.
