I used various canned lubes for a year but now use a Scottoiler - wish I'd put one on from day one!
Lube is OK but I kept finding myself hundreds of miles from home after a days trail riding with a very dry, dirty and rattly chain. I could have carried lube with me but that's extra weight and hassle. The Scottoilers worth every penny and I've only adjusted my chain once in 10000 miles (180 on the bolts!).
Fitting wasn't too bad, although there's nowhere to connect the vacuum feed, and detailed instructions can be found on the 'chaingang' FAQs. www.f650.com
A Scottoiler (or similar) is worth considering if you're doing riding in all weathers over all kinds of terrain - ie what the GS was built for
Wot's "Chainlube"?. Sorry Spout old Chap, couldn't resist it. That's a beer I owe you at Princetown then,eh?
Billyboy.
(Seriously though, I found Rock Oil lube good enough for my old SLR)
Fitted a Scottoiler to my TDM850 in 1996 when bought new. Sold it 30 months later with 16k miles. It still sported the original chain which had been adjusted only twice other than during routine sevices and tyre changes.
Use chainsaw oil rather than the expensive Scottoil.

Agree wholeheartedly. It has to be a Scottoiler or similar device. My Tiger has now done 17000 miles and the chain is probably only 25% used. ATF is another alternative to use in it.
I use Silkolene Titainium chain gel, in a spray can. Apply to hot chain after a ride, when cool...wipe off excess. I have done 800km trip days without problem, just do it at the end of each day.
