Sorry about the numpty question but it's 28 years since I had a chain drive bike :).

Checking the chain on my wife's 800; I assume that, because the centre stand is an after market product, the chain tension is checked with the bike on it's side stand - is that correct?

Many thanks :thumby:

Search is your friend, but for now ...

Centre stand, prop stand ... your chain is at it's tightest when the gearbox sprocket centre, the swing arm spindle centre and the rear axle spindle centre are ALL in line. Any movement up or down from this straight line position will put slack in to the chain :thumb

Wheel the bike back and forwards to find the chains tightest spot, then adjust at this position with all three above in line .... and everything will be just fine :thumb

The manual for my 2012 F800GS clearly says to do the chain measurements & adjustments with the bike on the side stand so that's what I do.

And to get them in line, I use a ratchet strap through the wheel, over the seat…

Thanks for the replies - I've no idea what any of it means, I'll just check it on the side stand I'm sure it'll be fine.

Thanks again :thumby:

Only because BMW can't be arsed to explain the above ... because some numpties wouldn't be able to understand it :blast

It might well be that on the side stand the alignment above is correct and you'll be fine :thumb

If the three centres are not in line then the chain will go tighter than your adjustment when suspension movement takes place

Chain life, sprockets and bearings are now in jeopardy :rob

Edit ... ha, see what I mean with Post 5 :augie

Ahhh it's Monday now, the weekend haze has cleared and I understand - it was the ratchet that did it.

Many thanks
