Idiot question:

How thick are fresh rear brake pads? Is it 3mm when you're best to change them?

Too cold to mess about at the moment so trying to wait as long as possible without being silly and risking damage.

Be a man - change 'em when it's metal on metal.

Or like I do, when it's down to the wear indicator.

That last 3mm will fly through and you'll scour yer discs. So I'd change em now.. it only takes ten mins.

Get Sintered pads as they last way longer with no noticable wear on the discs...

Busters were doing Sets failry cheap reclently so I ordered a set:
Part number 580883 Goldfren FA181HH Brake Pads

Havn't arrived yet to tell you how good they are though.

The manual tells you how to check rear brake pad thickness. Brake disc should not be visible through bore 1 of inboard brake pad.(Check from nearside of bike to do this). 3mm sounds OK for the time being though.

Do not use goldfren pads . :augie get your pads from anywhere and any type, but not those.

Used to be called newfren, and the reputation was so bad they changed the name . The used to be so cheap to the trade with a huge profit margin but i still refused to sell them.

Although I've never had to change the pads on my 1200GS, on all previous bikes I've always used EBC HH. I assume my GS has OE pads in.

Apart from my Kawasaki ZZR600, which uses genuine Honda CBR900 pads :augie :augie

I just ordered some..

I've never changed the pads in the 1200 before, but have ordered a set last night from here
http://www.gsshop.biz/ :D

I have used his Ferodo platinum pads on my 1150 and was more than happy with the bite, feel and life of them.....

Get your stuff from the man who (NOse):augie
Got to Steptoe. We get all this FREE information from the man,
so help out in these tryin times for the small business. :rob
I'm sure we get the same kit from Steptoe as he uses himself,
so that is good enough for me.:beerjug:

Thanks all. I'll have a nosey at the wear indicator tomorrow Dave.

Better early than late I reckon. I'm hard on rear pads and they're coming up 12k.

Naturally it'll be Steptoe for the pads. Never done them myself before but know the deal and will DIY as soon as I can get out in slightly warmer temperatures (no garage):(.

3mm on your pads will depend on usage and style of riding, get a set in ready for a change, 5mins of a job.
I used a set of goldfren on my 06 GSA and they only lasted 3000miles, the rear pads were near as dam down to the metal, fronts not much better.
Gone back to BM pads for now.

not sure, but i seem to recall that the minimum is 1.5mm :nenau

i'd look it up, but the info's not on this computer. at 3mm i'd be getting another pair in and keeping a close eye on the old ones.

30000 miles here and 70% worn :thumb

Guess you've one of the non-ABS non-linked brakes version?

get your pads from Steptoe
I would if the fecker had ever replied to my PMs :augie

Bad at their job or bad at wear??
At £8 I can probably just throw em in the bin.

always use EBC HH myself. Pads normally start at 8 or 6 mm and have wear limits anywhere from 2mm (old Brembos) to 0.5mm (EEK!) but you'll need to look it up.

I hate HH pads with a vengeance. When its cold and or wet they take an age to do anything so town driving is a nightmare. When everything is dry and warm they are great so I suppose different pads for winter and summer would be an option.
