Change top box

Hi all, I'm new to the forum and new to the GS. I have a 2020 1250 (none adventure) with a Vario top box and no panniers/racks. I'm wanting to add a 65 litre aluminium top box but when the Vario carrier is removed, there's no support between the rack and subframe. I'm wanting to put a universal carrier on and not a Givi so is there a part available to replace the Vario carrier to provide support for another top box to go on? TIA

Either buy a generic rack, from the likes of Touratech or get the GSA rack (which also replaces the pillion handles). You'll then be able to bolt on the aftermarket rack & box.

Just be aware that IMO a top box spoils the overall handling including making it more top heavy and unstable especially when maneuvering the bike around, slow riding, pulling up at and away from junctions. Even more so if you can’t flat foot when sat on the bike. Also makes it more difficult sometimes when getting the bike off the side stand. Don’t get me wrong as I still periodically use a top box on my gsa but only if needs must which is hardly ever. I never carry a pillion and mostly use a Touratech bag that clips on and replaces the pillion seat along with size panniers for camping and touring.

It's only an extra 20 litres of space (65L instead of 45L) that I need so that I wouldn't have to use a tail pack as well like I do now so the additional weight is negligible. A pillion is heavier than a top box and you can still ride and stop ok with one

I left the vario carrier in place and fitted a Givi plate on top of it, worked just fine, so cant see why you couldnt get an aftermarket box and carrier and do the same?

hey Declan, GS has been swapped for a R1250RS , more suited to my dainty short legs have been sidetracked into touring, must get out again some evening, know anyone with too many deer ?

I stuck my nose out today and thought it was still a bit cold for me still. Next month maybe.
I did look at the RS but, my heart was always with the gsa.

I was counting about 20 fallow last week in a valley near me. I’m not sure, but I hope it belongs to the farmer I am meeting in 2 weeks.

of course that means they have probably buggered of to pastures new lot to be said for Munties, reliable and handbag sized
