Rubbish........ fling the bike onto its side and pour the oil in the drain hole.
Ye see, when yer a expert..... there is a solution for everything.

I never said there wasn't away around it. Just a pain to flop the bike over, and get out the measuring cup from the kitchen.

Going to look at an 1100GS tomorrow with a view to buying it.

I've heard conflicting advice (not here:) ) on whether the egine should be cold or "warm" when checking the oil:confused:

What is the correct way?

BTW I normally do all of my own servicing, it's just this little query that I'm not sure about.

Thanks

Steve

It's not really a problem if you can't move the filler plug after draining the gearbox oil.

Just turn the bike upside down, rest it on iits handlebars and pour the original oil back in through the drain hole.

I hope this helps

Thanks for advice changing gearbox and engine oils.

Both of those tasks are done now in plenty of time for my departure on friday.

The only difficulty was the sump drain plug was VERY tight.

Thanks again,

Andrew

I'm pleased that you've got the job done - however, the real test is not if your bike takes you off to France, it's 'will it bring you back?'

:D

Hi,

I'm off to S.France on the bike next week so thought I'd change the engine oil before I go. I rang up my local BMW dealer who quoted £40 (ex VAT) for the tool to remove the oil filter, so I'm waiting for one to arrive from Motorworks!Any help much appreciated!!

Andrew

 I bought one from my local BM dealer for £7.99 inc only last month

Yes, I was in Park Lane in Battersea on Monday and was quoted about £6 plus VAT. Seems to me that <£8 all up is the going rate!
