if i want to remove ms windows 2000 and replace it with windows xp professional, is it a simple case of putting in xp cd and running it ? or a lot more involved? any help much appreciated! thanks :)

I'm far from a windowz expert, but that's exactly what I did and to my utter amazement, it all worked fine.

Had to re-load all the software of course - yawn.

You can do it like that, straight off an 'upgrade' cd, but it may be better to take the option of re-formatting your HD and starting from a totally fresh install.

I believe (though I may well be wrong) that if you only upgrade, you don't get the choice to change the file system from FAT16 (which there's a good chance you're using) to FAT32 (which is generally faster and better organised).

Upgrading rather than starting from scratch can also leave nasty residual bits of stuff all over the place- it's better to star from scratch IMO.

(PS F.A.T is file allocation table, basically to do with the way data is stored...FAT 32 is the 32 bit version of Fat16)

lost already?? :(
how do i re-format hd?
and then can i just pop in xp disk and run?
or am i just in way over my head?
just for info sake all i am trying to do is create a home music collection? a sort of juke box with a touch screen monitor connected so that i can put all my cd's onto it and download music etc. i was advised to keep it seperate from my work pc so that i don't download any viruses etc from limewire or other sharing music places! :mmmm

Create a boot floppy disk.

Boot it up into DOS from the floppy (take the option to include CD-ROM support).

Wipe the hard drive by typing FORMAT C: [return] at the A:> prompt. It will ask you to confirm.

Usually the CD-ROM will be drive E, so insert your OS disk and type E: [return], then SETUP [return]

...and off it jolly well goes.

Perhaps Google "install xp" and have a read of a few articles first so you can get a flavour????

you don't need a boot floppy like my granddad did for W98, you boot from the XP disc (might need to change the boot sequence in the BIOS).

once you've done that, you just follow the onscreen instructions. piece of piss :)

Windows 2000 is installed with the NTFS as default, I don't think you can run it with a FAT32 file system, might be wrong but don't think so.
If you use an update disc version of XP somewhere along the line during the installation you will be given a choice -
'Install Upgrade' - 'recommended'
and beside the choice will be a dropdown menu arrow, when you drop down it, it gives the option to install a clean installation, select this and you will then be given the option to format the existing installation as FAT32 or an NTFS, choose NTFS 'quick' format.

If you have a pukka Wondows XP Pro disc, then it's as easy as putting it in your CD-ROM drive and rebooting. It will do it all for you with minimum input from your good self. It will reformat and when it asks you to choose the file system, choose NFTS. Just remember that you will lose EVERYTHING on your hard drive unless you back it up onto CD-ROMs or falsh drives, etc. Good luck! :thumb
