Hi there guys and girls,

I am going to change my back brake pads on my 06 1200GS this weekend as they are getting close to wear the disc. The bike has no ABS or linked brake system.

Has anybody done their own and got any pointers or adivce for me before I start the change? Any help is much appriciated!

Cheers,

stu

It's a quick job on the GS and www.r1200gs.info has an easy to follow guide. Click the HOW TO button and the the 'change the brake pads' link.

Get some brake cleaner aerosol and an old toothbrush to clean up the caliper and pin before re-assembling.

If you use copper grease, be carefull how much you put on as you don't want it on the pads and it will attract road dirt. I didn't bother and just put the lightest smear of vaseline (i.e. put it on then wipe it off with your fingers) on the retaining pin to keep it from going rusty as it was showing some signs of corrosion.

While you are looking at the rear brakes, clean out the cross drilled holes in the rear disc as well, as these tend to accumulate crud, and if you have the means, check the disc thickness as they wear quite quickly.
