RE BMW GSA Comms.

OK i have been using autocom pro system linked with a PMR kenwood radio over the last 6 or so years. Not perfect and sometimes every annoying we ride as a group and it seems the best solution so far. We have a hard wired PTT

our designed PTT hard wired

Current hard wired autocom and kenwood radio

on the bike and a autocom blue tooth module this gives us a link for music and phone to our BMW Nav V we don't carry pillions so there is no need for headset to headset on the bikes. We suffer a lot of tedious annoying little electric problems and some noise issues we run in line filters and the radios are 5watt, supposed to be the best for distance. All this said we have had lots of rides and trips through Europe where the systems have proved invaluble. But here it is i have just bought after trying every sodding helmet on the market including the Schuberth C3 pro , E1 , Hornet 2 etc etc another Shoei Neotec this time the imminent and I was reluctant to cut out the speaker holes wider as i did with my other Neotec helmet, this set me off thinking about blue tooth.

NEVER BEEN A FAN, of blue tooth here is why , 1. Drops connection to often,
2. Having to charge up all the time
3. Have to be almost holding hands to be in range.
4. Most systems seem to use a open mic when group riding (if you cough sniff or fart the whole group hear it?)

However i went to a shop on a ride out with our little gang the last Saturday and met John the owner and x MD of Aria UK at his shop bargain biker brands Newcastle under lyme Staffs. I have to say he was very very helpful and knowledgable he shown us the new sena 10u for shoei Neotec and indeed most other branded lids, which by the way he has there for you to try or buy including the new E1. He even took his own personal helmet apart to show us the new blue tooth workings. Long story short I was nominated as our gangs BLUE TOOTH guinea pig. I then bought a new Neotec and a Sena 10u system which came delivered within 2 days to me all fitted in by John ready to rock n roll. This also has a remote controller that fits on handlebars, but can't be used when like me you have a BMW i-wheel

can't use this handlebar sent remote so all settings have to be done via the two buttons in helmet cheek.

New Shoei noted like the neatness of blue tooth

mic is tidy and NO NOISE whilst riding.

very similar to my 2 year old Shoei borealis

A friend and member of our club Barry Smith who works for Royal Enfield is very good with electrics he has tried all the systems you can name including the new wintec product the Hawk which is marketed and sold as a Interide product he says that was terrible would not hold blue tooth connections and the back up was not good that put me of trying that item. Continuing on Barry has a sena blue tooth not 10u but the earlier one with a unknown PMR radio linked up through the Sena SR10 adaptor this enables the pmr radio to work via blue tooth. He experiences drop outs and after recent ride down through Spain he came back saying although blue tooth is neat and tidy it just will not handle PMR radio, Music, NAV V , and iPhone tel calls. He is still experimenting at cost!

This is the Sena SR10 PMR radio adaptor

Sena PTT which i have fitted just to test my intention is to hard wire my system a sealer photo re PTT

Sena 10U Kenwood radio link wire again a bit flimsy!

this is the Sena 10U 12v hard wired cable which I intend to cut cigar off and hard wire into system where my auto currently is.

here is how we do it autocom on a BMW XR1000

after hearing his tales of woe i was somewhat put off but still carried on and bought the Sena SR10 pmr adaptor and kenwood lead, which i have soft wired it all as a trial and yesterday i rode 100 miles or so, the Headset sent 10u is great! works easy and the pairing order we have is as follows from instructions of Sena HQ

Sena Technologies

You can try the following pairings:

-iPhone to Nav 5
-iPhone to 10U via Media Selective Pairing(for music only)
-Nav 5 to 10U via Second Mobile Phone Pairing
-SR10 to 10U via Mobile Phone Pairing

as I said after riding yesterday 1st thing the NAV V completely locked up on the media play app after trying to play music. So I stopped removed it from the bracket restarted it and it was ok. I left the music app alone and rode onwards and the conversations between bikes (all of which were using as my old set up autocoms with kenwood per radios, i was able to speak and receive them up to about a mile clear and then about 1.5miles with a little distortion.Even at faster speeds it was OK at about 1 mile. The music when i tried it from Nav V would not hold and dropped out, also the phone rang when i tried to answer it on NAV V it just went off. Although it all seemed to work until you try music? or NAV V phone calls.WHY!!!

I have to say I like it when i pulled up at the fuel stop loaded the gas, went to the kiosk paid no wires to unplug from bike no dangling helmet wire, wasn't cold so no Gerbings cable to unplug, and as I'm keyless no ignition key just back on the bike and ride that was great!
Also like the fact that the Sena 10U mic is not stuffed in your lips, and the fact that there is NO noise at all whilst riding unlike the vOX on the autocom.. So I am really wanting to get this system to fit and work for me.

Hear is my Questions:-
has anyone got a similar set up and if so have you got problems, can anyone give me any info how to make it work better.... OR can you recommend a better system that works?

Sorry for boring you on a Sunday Morning with this...

Cheers Big D

I'm very interested to see what advice you get. I too have a Neotec, and I would like a Bluetooth device so I can listen to music off the Nav 5, and also navigation instructions. I'm not really interested in bike to bike.

I think if you ain't bothered about PMR radio give John at bargain branded biker a call he will fit your system in your helmet and help you set it up for what you need. It seems the issues really start when you introduce the SR10 for PMR

Hard wired all the way D. Bluetooth is for part timers

Regarding your BT connection from the Sena to the NAV V. ISTR there being some issues with various BT devices connecting and working with the NAV V, I think Sena may have been one of them. Some BT headset manufacturers have issued new software to improve/fix the problems (I know Interphone have). Have you downloaded and installed the latest software to your Sena?

yes, I thought that, had autocom for 10 years plus and only changed when SPA went wrong. I then tried a sena 20s, sound quality, for music, clear as a bell satnav nagging, phone calls where caller does not believe they are chatting to me a motorway speeds, and no wires to snag.
also no set up faff as with autocom, setting vox levels, noise sensor stuff etc etc
I guess starcom/autocom will have to up their game to stay in the market

how is that bracket held on?

I'd like to make on just like that :)

I went to dent on Saturday and had no issues with a 660 and my packtalk on the way there. Came to leave and it wouldn't connect at all.

Turning the 660 on after the packtalk sorted it and it connected straight away.

I've always had wired but got to say I really like the Packtalk.

I too have had hardwired but used stascom digital (same as auto com but smaller) but have just purchased Sena 20s unit and first couple of weeks usage highly delighted with it.
1. Battery life superb last much longer (ok still have to charge but easier to remove off helmet to do)
2. does not seem to drop out like older types.
3.sound quality blew stardom out of the water ,music , intercom and phone quality excellent
4. even though the unit is quite big on the side of the helmet buttons easy to find and use and volume wheel excellent to adjust on the move.

If one criticism is the complexity of the set up and manual if you print it out very thick but just keep playing with it and finding new things and setting up how i want.
Agree autocom / starcom are going to drastically update there units to compete with units such as Sena
