I've got an Optimate 4 with SAE connectors. Can I charge my 2009 GSA's battery by connecting the Optimate via the bike's accessory socket or am I better off wiring a connector straight to the battery?

I leave my bmw charger plugged into the socket under the seat all the time, 1st battery lasted 6 years.

I fitted an additional socket wired direct to the battery via a fuse as it also allows the use of a compressor or anything else that uses more current than the canbus controlled socket allows.

+1 with an optimate 4, works fine otherwise you'll struggle with the canbus switching itself off I believe?

Socket under seat both bikes. First battery lasted six years the second seven. Never a problem

These chargers do work with Canbus but expecting two sets of computer code to work reliably and charge a lead acid is asking for trouble.
If it can go titsup it will go titsup so keep it simple and as Norfolk Tiger says you get a socket capable of doing real work.
