Check you rear brake pads?

My rear pads were getting fairly worn after 20k (read it and weep abs types) but nothing too urgent (not picked up in a service a fortnight a go). Anyway coming into a roundabout the other day the pedal went right down to the stop with no brake at all. Stopped to check and discovered the pads worn completely away and the fluid level gone completely. When i got home and removed the pads they had no backing material left at all and it looked suspiciously like the pads had been ripped off the backing plates, which would explain the sudden loss of pressure in the brake. Anyway new pads and a protracted brake bleeding sesh have sorted it but it may be worth checking your pads if they are well worn to avoid a similar mishap.

Get sintered Pads (just don't buy them in a dealer).
They'll last wayyyy longer..

If they wear down to nout you'll scor the disk and then the next set will be eaten in no time.

I managed to get less than 1000miles on a set on the servo 12ADV with the oem butter pads

26,000 miles on the original set of rear pads with ABS before I changed them. Am I missing the point here ??

yes i know

Here we go again, the old pad wear thread :augie

yes we all know you know about pads but have you thought about all the new guys with gs's who havent a clue how crap the pads are

mine disintigrated in austria last year needed new pads and disc after 3200 miles (original BMW chocolate ones)

anyway they fitted new ones and did a few miles on them and i was due to go off on another trip
but i had that nagging doubt in my mind and i read so much on here, that i got my dealers to check my pads during a service
they said brakes fine 4mm on back and about 4 on the front no problem , but still had that nagging doubt after all so many of us had problems that i bought three sets of pads and me and a mate fitted them

i couldnt beleive what i was looking at - those fu@kin crap pads with 4mm on them (the back ones) where the two inspection holes had left an impression going through to the inside of the pad, it had a crack running from one side of the pad to the other through one of the circles (vertical -not following the disc)

so dont ever rely on a visual inspection or a dealer to spot it, its best to get some one who knows what they are doing to show you how to take them out inspect and clean them regularly - they are very easy to do once you have done it a couple of times :thumb2

Also unblock all the holes in the rear disc with a punch or similar . They fill up with pad and road dirt residue and wear grooves in the pads and discs.

Doesn't happen on the front discs due to the airflow.
