Choke shuts off too quickly on '02 1150GS

Hi all,

I have a 2002R1150 GS WITH 9000 miles on the clock.

I haven't had the bike long, and I notice that as I start it with the choke on all is well, but then as soon as you pull off the choke closes straight away, and the bike often stalls on your first gear change as the revs drop off between changes.

For info once warm the bike idles at about 1000 rpm, does this seem low?

Any advice on how to change the speed at which the choke closes off would be greatly appreciated :thumb2
 
The fuel enrichment for a cold engine is controlled by the engine control unit, the lever on the bars is only a fast idle control, most people don't use them.
1000rpm is possibly a bit high most will happily idle at 900rpm
I would suggest a couple of minutes warm up before you ride off

Yes 1100 + or - 50 rpm

there are 2 x big screws on the rear face of the throttle bodies (affectionately know as BBS or Big Brass screws )

Go for a run and when its is @ operating temp, stop somewhere and back them out equal amounts of approximately an 1/8 th of a turn until you get the required RPM


Do NOT Touch the little screws on the inside which contact the throttle stops

factory setting is 1100 + or - 50 and I definitely wouldn;t call it Happy idiling at 900 :aidan

I would suggest a couple of minutes warm up before you ride off

Sorry Ducky check the manual! BMW recommend starting and riding off and not warming up

My usual is to pull on the helmet, get on the bike start it and start pulling on gloves and ride away as soon as I am in order
 
The fast idle normally sits where you set it but if the previous owner found it had got a bit sticky and was difficult to release he would probably have cleaned it at the handlebar end and put some lube on it at which point it becomes self cancelling and it stalls. If you can put up with it for a few weeks it will probably fix itself, mine used to. Otherwise clean out the lube and leave the slider dry.

I used to have my tick-over set at 1,000RPM as well which was fine, I just felt that the BMW spec'd idle was a bit fast for a tractor engine.

.......or take a thin rubber band and loop it into the joint between the fast idle lever and the bar grip.......that should provide enough friction to return operation.
The original friction is only provided by a tiny ball bearing in the joint, and over time, they push a groove into the plastic or fall out altogether.
 
My fast idle seems to lift it about 50rpm only... it cuts out if I dont hold the throttle for 60-90 secs...

There are two settings on the fast idle a first long "slide" adjustment then a "push and hold" extra bit - but I have to be stood there whether I hold throttle or "push and hold" button :nenau

There is an adjuster inside a rubber sleeve just below the handle bars. Adjust it :)
 
My Fast idle has two stages, 1st stage holds it at 200rpm ish and if i pull up all the way about 2500rpm (only used when really really cold) now i twist the throttle to start and no fast idle

That's what has happened to mine, you can replace it but not without having to remove the grip which if heated is a pain, but do-able.
 
Thanks for all your replies, I will see what happens, as I say it's only an issue when the engine is cold....
