City Nav V Numaps on zumo 400

The NuMaps Lifetime card is an update product, you need to already have mapping for the region installed on your GPS. The Lifetime aspect will provide periodic updates, four a year, of the mapping data as a download. Lifetime means the lifetime of the GPS, or until Garmin decide that they can no longer support that particular device. If the GPS is sold the Lifetime subscription is terminated.

It says the following within the text if you expand the 'requirements tab':
This map update only can be used to update the preloaded maps that came installed on your Garmin device.

You can buy the NuMaps Lifetime card cheaper than that from Handtec.

The City Navigator Europe product is the one off purchase of the European region to install on a Garmin GPS that either has no pre-installed street mapping or has mapping for another region. For example an American unit. You could install this and then buy the lifetime card, maybe a year later, to keep the mapping current.

it looks like there are maps from 2008 on the unit already, just i was trying find out whats best to buy instead of a once off update.

seen as zumo 400 outdated may be as handy not buy life time updates.

if download the maps and install them on the unit, how do you then view them also on Basecamp?

cheers for link to Handtec forgot about them

When my 550 died, Garmin did a service exchange for a 660.
but they also transferred my lifetime subscription from the 550 to the 660

that was fair good of them.

just saw few lads with 400 & 550 errors last while and garmin refusing do that exchange now i think.

my main objective is to have ability plan route on laptop and save my tracks when go off road.

gps has 2008 maps and i have just downloaded basecamp and express but as i am new to using a gps and laptop not sure how get the updated maps onto basecamp and the gps together.

Yep, as an exception with the service exchange thing they will do that, in effect it's a repair of your existing unit. The replacement for a 660 is only because they didn't have a 550 available (or maybe the 660 is actually the same cost to them anyway).

What I meant was if you were to buy another Garmin don't expect to be able to transfer the subscription. Same applies if you sell it to someone else, they have to buy a new sub.

There should be an option menu (at bottom left I think) on one of the screens of Garmin Express that gives you the option to install the mapping to both PC and GPS. With the 550 you can install to your PC only and then use MapInstall to write the mapping to your GPS. You can also do this with the 660 but you'll loose Junction View and 3D buildings, neither of which the 550 uses.

well i am going try get maps next week on sd card that way have them in hand not a download

Do bear in mind that buying mapping on an SD card does effectively prevent you from putting them on your PC. You can still use them from within Basecamp (possibly also in a USB card reader, though not sure on this point) but this will mean that your Zumo will need to be plugged in and will be very slow to load as Zumo 400/500 series are USB1. I would say that if you want to do route plotting on your PC the SD card option is one to avoid, sorry...

Unless you're on dial-up then I would recommend the gift card from Handtec for the cheapest buy (see my first response). Once the card arrives scratch off the panel on the back to reveal a code that you enter into the 'redeem gift card' field on your myGarmin account. This will enable download of the latest mapping. The download takes a while, it's a few GB and Garmin throttle the connection anyway, leave overnight, works every time for me.
