Yes, I am a bit confused by this as well?

As you say the CD is free and yes you need a new unlock code.

Now I'm not sure, but I swear that I read that the unlock code was 150 Dollars...WTF?

V7 arrived today have not installed yet as for paying for unlock code depends if and when you registered it if you have to pay its
$150.

Al, yup that's right $150 plus vat, now at the current exchange rate that'll be about £80 plus vat so it will be interesting to see how much Garmin UK will charge for it. I'm going to the USA in March so I'll buy mine then.

I run European city select and as you say the cd is free but logging on for the unlock code cost me £53.

mind you, if city nav is anything like the city select the extra information provided is enormous.

Just got v7

and it cost me a big fat 0 to unlock. I think it depends on when you registered. If it was quite recent they will allow you to unlock free of charge. See the Garmin site for more info.

Tricks for new players;
http://www.garmin.com/unlock/update.jsp

This means that if you unlocked City Navigator Europe v6 on or after 5 Jan 2005 then your upgrade to v7 is free

But you did not unlock it you say, it came with an unlock code on a piece of paper.
How would Garmin know when you bought it then ?
Did MapSource prompt you to register the product ? Were you silly enough to actually register it ?

So on packaged products with the unlock code included they use the registered date.

Garmin will give anybody the upgrade CD but it is not usable without a new unlock code.
If you are not sure if you registered the product then go thru the unlock process and if it prompts for your credit card details then just exit if you do not want to pay.
