I would like to keep the stainless steel exhaust highly polished on the GS1200, but not sure what method or product is best to achieve this. I have seen some pretty ropey looking exhausts on fairly new GS's. Perhaps should have ordered chrome for the little extra, but too late now! I had planned on the good old tube of Solvol, but seasoned GS owners may have a better idea?
Any suggestions welcome.

Wonder wheels with wire wool seems to be a top choice for getting the crud off. Then, solvol autosol or peek polish to get the shine back. Until the next trip where it'll all go brown and dull again :(

cleaning stainless

Try wonder wheels found out by accident brush it onto a cold pipe it may take a few goes trust me it does work (and it helps if you do it from new) wait a bit :augie then wash it off with plenty of water then just use autosol then if you really have got nothing else better to do use T Cut for a real shine. :thumb

Are you sure you meant to type wire wool John?

The crud comes off with water alone followed by solvol....(well, it did the last and only time I did mine about a year ago!)

I use Valma chrome cleaner on mine. (it comes in a tube). I would imagine any chrome cleaner would do. It makes fast work of getting the can back to showroom condition with minimum elbow grease.

As exhasut cans have been brought into the equation, my thoughts were for the stainless down pipes as they're the things that really discolour. Using the above on the chrome end can might work, might cause some tears though :mmmm

If your down pipes are a little warm it helps the Wonder Wheels work, rinse off then polish with metal polish as other have said, But your facing a tough battle keeping that brown oxidisation at bay, most people give up :(

Like others on this thread, found out about wonder wheels by accident. Finish off with autosol . . . . .graet stuff

Cleaning your exhaust

I found this great stuff called 'Luster Lace' - my local Hein Gericke sells it. Basically its a pot of different strips of cloth impregnated with a metal cleaner and its beats Autosol hands down - mainly because you can get wrap it around the headers and can and get a sweet result in minutes. Its not cheap - £15 grots but well worth it.

Cheers
Johnny
