Just back from Stella Alpina. Well I'm back but the bike's still in Italy:(

2001 R1150GS 49K miles

Gearbox noise when in neutral suggests worn input shaft bearing.

Pull clutch lever in and there is a little squeal, suggesting worn release bearing.

Bike quickly became horrible to ride, very grabby, lurching forward and impossible to pull away smoothly.

BMW dealer in Turin was particularly unhelpful. Shook his head, shrugged his shoulders and offered me an earliest appointment mid October. Thanks a bunch, pal! Good to see BMW customer service is alive and well and always prepared to go the extra mile to help a traveller in distress. NOT!

Is it possible for both bearings to fail at the same time? Does one failing put more strain on the other perhaps?

Could I have continued riding? It didn't feel safe. I was worried about a complete lock up or doing further damage.

Does anyone have experience of Carole Nash European Breakdown? How long does repatriation take?

Well it's good that you stop riding cause you do more damage .
I had bearing collapse on intermediate shaft , start as rattle 1st then I drove for about 200ml and wheel locked up , got towed to Dublin . Insurance company was AXA at time .
