I went for a bit of a spin today and the bloody clutch started slipping  :mad:not happy its a 2006 gsa with 6500 miles on it, any body had this problem before?Any idea how/ what sort of job it is to do and how long should it take me? Any. pit falls any advice will be much appreciated:thumb2(is it just me or is it the newer the bike/car/washing machine etc. the more sh*t it is ?)

Check the clutch fluid level in the handlebar reservoir. As the clutch wears, the level rises. If the reservoir becomes wedged without an air gap, the clutch slips. If this is the case, syphon a little off with a syringe.

To remove the reservoir cap, you may need to use two small screwdrivers to depress the clips on the 'safety' cap.

If the level is ok, you may have a leaking gearbox/engine oil seal.

Clutch slip

Have a look under the gearbox any signs of an oil leak, could be the old favorite seal?.

Sounds familiar

My GS12 clutch failed at 9,800 miles

I noticed it particularly in 3rd & 4th - I'd give it a handful & the engine went quicker but the wheels didn't :tears & I'm sorry to say it deteriorated pretty quickly.

Mine was under warranty so dealer was able to look after me a bit.

Hope it doesn't end up hurting your wallet too much...

That's what I was wondering as well, having not long since had the seals between engine and gearbox replaced. Caught mine early before any oil got onto the clutch.

But BMW might be prevailed upon to contribute if it turns out to be a seal failure issue.

Quite an involved job, seems to take BMW mechanics, who presumably have done the job a few times, about 4 hours to sort.

Vernie,

my 2006 had clutch slip in 3rd and 4th under power before the 600 mile service and it was the old gearbox/clutch seal which needed replacing aling with a new clutch. Hopefully you haven't got that, but if you do its something you shouldn't ride with (SPC wouldn't let me take the bike home from the 600 mile service).

Good luck and hope its only something simple.

I had 'exactly' the same as you describe and as already suggested found it to be the resevoir being too full as the clutch wears. You only need to remove the smallest amount but ....hey presto...instant cure and a merry Christmas!
