I have decided after 22 years to going road test some of these new fangled GS'S .So am taking the 800 and 1200 out for a test ride tommorow if all goes well there will possibly be a genuine 1 owner R80gs paralever up for sale I suppose i'll have to subscribe then so keep your fingers crossed .;)

C'n'C's road test

So here we go but before I start I must say thanks to Southport SuperBikes and Roy for looking after me. Roy took me out as I don’t know the area that well and so we could swap bikes half way round
F800 gs
It’s a nice slim bike, brakes and handling are great but it was raining and the tyres were brand new so could not explore the outer limits .The parallel twin is really strong and willing but its no boxer which should be no surprise, but that seat is outrageous how do they get away with that after 20 mins my ass hurting so I gladly handed it back to Roy and took the 1200.

Now that’s better a comfy seat and a crank that rotates in the right direction .First impressions are the front end feels a bit strange due to the lack of diving under braking ,engine is responsive and spins up quickly and has a nice sweet spot between 4-6000 rpm gear box much improved from the airhead. It dried up a bit so could give it some beans found the handling overall to be very good and stable, the brake set up is excellent nearly had me over the bars once or twice .The test bike had ESA on it but did not get to play with it .I kind of felt at home on the 1200 but for a bike with more than twice the horse power of my old paralever the performance was not the qantum leap I was expecting. More evolution than revolution, getting towards the rev line it seemed quite harsh and vibrated lot (nearly gave me white finger) but having never ridden one before I don’t know is this is normal or not.
So I liked the 1200 but did it give me the same buzz as when I road tested the paralever all those years ago not really I was expecting a bit more.
Would I buy one yes could I have one as my only bike no the airhead is staying so I will have to re jig the garage to make some more space (the airhead lynch mod has dispersed now )

So please don’t take this as a criticism of anyones bike they are just my thoughts and remember I have had my paralever from brand new back in 1988 .I am now in the market for a used 1200, are there any years of manufacture I should steer clear from are they all ok I am only thinking about the bevel box I believe after 2007 they had a drain plug and were not sealed for life.

Cheers C’n’C 22 years GS :)

Good Shout CnC

However, ("the same buzz as when I road tested the paralever all those years ago") you just answered your own question I.E. 22 years ago, now a much older and wiser CnC, its never gonna be like yer first love again ;) at least you have the Luxury of owning both of them, :drool

Any how back to the question, which 1200's to steer clear of:-

Any made from 2005 to 2009 :thumb

And whatever you do don;t buy one of them with the Tiny Tanks :augie it

Best regards and good luck with the hunt, Stretch :thumb
