So...got a CNE 2009 DVD and installed it into my 2610..question is..should this have a list of campsites (if so where do I find them)or is another DVD required???.....

Anyone know please??

Thanks...

:)

Campsite coverage on the Garmin POIs included with the mapping seems to be limited to Scandinavia. There are plenty of freely available POI files out there, though with the limited custom way-point capacity (Garmin tend to call them Favourites) of your 2610 you can only fit a maximum of 500 on at a time. Realistically less as you might want POIs other than campsites as well.

There are over 19,000 European campsites here, you can load these into Mapsource and then select the sites for the area you're going to before uploading to your GPS.

Thanks Bumpkin for that...I'll maybe be taking a trip (in the Land Rover)over to Italy Croatia and maybe on down through Turkey and on to Cyprus at some stage....Looks like I will have to take my Eeepc with me and load campsites into the GPS en route for where ever I think I'll end up...bit of a pain...can't understand why if Garmin can list hotels why they can't list campsites considering that most motos camp all over Europe as opposed to hotels...

It seems like POIs are something of an after thought as far as Garmin are concerned, the coverage if thin on the ground for hotels and things like petrol stations are frequently woefully out of date.

This could be a good time for you to upgrade to something like a StreetPilot 2720 (superseded your 2610) or newer which would take as many POIs as you require. The likes of the 2720 can be had off eBay for not much more than you could sell your 2610 for. All the bike mounting hardware for your 2610 would work with a 2720 or 2820. Maybe you're a 2610 evangelist tho'.

Good point...the 2610 is my first GPS ever......I'd have no problem moving to another one!!....Would the CNE 2009 DVD work again on the 2720???...

What you're saying is that the 2720 can have heaps of POI installed???...For example a heap of those campsites?(must do some research then)

If so,might be the way to go when doing a long journey where one does'nt really know where one will end up!!!

Any Garmin that runs the NT mapping, that'll be anything younger than a 2610/original Quest, will take a huge number of POIs. This includes the Nuvi models which are primarily designed for car use, the lesser units don't have a defined routing capability (i.e. you can't set-up a specific route in Mapsource, just set a destination, the GPS then decides how to get there - not much use for recreational biking). Some high end Nuvis allow loading of specific routes and the Nuvi 550 is IPX7 waterproof which makes it good for biking. The motorcycle orietated models, SP2720, 2820 and then the Zumos are the best bet and all will take the full campsite POI file and others besides.

Regrettably your update DVD would not work with another Garmin without the appropriate unlock code, Garmin will only release/sell unlock codes for current mapping (2010), added to which the mapping version for the 2610 will be non NT where the later units ideally use NT mapping. They will run non NT but you won't be able to fit so much in the same memory (2720, 2820 have fixed memory, around 2GB ISTR). NT (New Technology) is compressed.

Surely with a bit of pre planning you should be able to get a sufficient number of camp-sites onto your 2610 for your trip?

Thanks again Bumpkin...you're educating me with every sentence!!

Yip...a bit of pre planning would be the way to go for sure...

...Just to confirm...I have the CNE 2009 map DVD and installed it on Mapsource after buying an unlock code...maybe I can use the 2009 maps if another Garmin is bought??

Thanks again

The unlock code is tied to both the Sat nav and the mapping, the mapping has an ID number which is unique to the mapping region (i.e. Europe), version (i.e. 2009) and type (i.e. City Nav NT), This map product ID combined with the serial number of your sat nav when passed though the secret Garmin algorithm comes up with an unlock code. A comparative check is done each time you run your sat nav that checks that the mapping in use is unlocked to the specific device it's being used on.

You could use the mapping you have on another Garmin GPS but you would need another unlock code that matches the same mapping ID with the serial number of that unit. Without this 2nd unlock code it won't work. Unfortunately, as I mentioned previously, Garmin only sell unlock codes for current mapping products, CNE 2009 is now superseded by CNE 2010.

Garmin are, no doubt, contractually tied to ensuring that they do their damnedest to ensure that the mapping data they licence from Navteq is not pirated. Someone called JetMouse has found a way around this though... ;)

What a lot of hits Google brings up. I often feel that downloading this sort of thing is a bit like sticking my paw into a snakepit. I might just re-install Windows on a spare computer out of idle curiosity as I currently only own o Garmin and it works too well to risk breaking it.

OK guys....that's a lot cleared up for me for sure.....

I'll see what I can come up with...if you ever pass through the mountains here I'll buy you a beer in the bistro next door!!

:D
