Can anybody give me a quick lesson in navigation, or tell me where to research it.
I can't seem to grasp what to set my 2720 to for long. & lat. British Grid etc. etc. and then how to transpose all the different figures you come across for locations in minutes and seconds and things.
I am travelling to France in 2 weeks and want to locate certain places by GPS location.

Please help. :nenau

Try typing in the address ;)
Seriously, if you can locate a position on a map, why not do the same on the GPS. You can zoom in, & use the touch screen to 'point' to a location. Then, off you go.

What different formats can the 2720 accept?

The 2610 format is h ddd mm.mmm and this is the only format it can accept. If I have the co-ords in a different format then I have to use Mapsource in the appropriate "coords mode" to convert that to something the 2610 will understand.

At starting point for research might be http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WGS_84 ?

Thanks for the interest, I am probably not making myself clear. I can navigate routes, add favourites etc. I can't cope with the numerical navigation part.
For example I wish to find a campsite in France with the coordinates:- Long. 0 00 07,13 Lat. 47 14 48,52 How do I do it?
Thanks

The format of that looks a little odd to me - I'm assuming this "converts" to
N47 14 48.5 W0 00 07.1 - somewhere near Samur ?

If so, then I'm not sure about the 2720 but for the 2610 you wouldn't be able to enter a Waypoint directly in that format. Using Mapsource I'd select Edit/Preferences/Position and choose Lat/Lon hddd mm'ss.s'' format, then create a Waypoint (anywhere) and set it's properties to be N47 14 48.5 W0 00 07.1

If I didn't have Mapsource then I'd use this site
to convert to h ddd mm.mmm' format
i.e. Degrees, Decimal Minutes: 0, 0.1183 -47, 14.8083

and enter that into the 2610 (but with only 3 decimal places)
i.e. N47 14.808 W0 00.118

I haven't got my 2610 to hand but, if you enter a position by 'pointing' at the touchscreen, it should come up with a lat/long. As others have said, there are better ways to do this by using a PC, with or without Mapsource.

In Mapsource, Ctrl - T, enter Lat/Long (use decimal seconds rather than your seconds with a decimal point) & press enter. The map 'centers' to your co-orinates. Add a waypoint flag, name it, and you've done it.

Thanks for that, BUT, how do you know what is N or S or E or W for your Lat. and Long. if it does not specify?
Thanks

If you're referring to a place that is north of the Equator, then the Latitude will start N. That's most places that you're likely to ride or drive to!

E or W refers to East or West of the 0° line of Longditude - the Greenwich Meridian.

But I can't figure why you need to be doing this unless the ONLY data you have is the Latitude and Longditude.

I have all sorts of numbers knocking around in all forms. I have a motorhome and I tow a trailer with my 1200gs on. Various sources supply campsite locations in different GPS formats and also I believe POI's. I am going to France in a couple of weeks and want to clear up my navigation problems before I go.
